Father of Rock Gods, Master Guitarist – The Atlantic
As a toddler, I was privileged to attend the Friends of Fred Walecki benefit concert in August 2000, held at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. Nestled in my mother’s arms, I caught glimpses of remarkable musicians such as David Crosby, Bonnie Raitt, and Linda Ronstadt. The backstage reverberated with music history as legends prepared to honor my father, Fred Walecki, a revered figure in the music industry.
The benefit concert was orchestrated by Bernie Leadon, a close friend of my father since their teenage years when Leadon frequented Westwood Music, Dad’s iconic musical-instrument shop in Los Angeles. The event was a heartfelt response to my father’s battle with Stage 4 throat cancer, which had led to a complete laryngectomy. Despite losing his vocal cords and having to communicate through an electronic buzzer, Dad retained his humor, even joking about sounding like an alien.
The evening was a celebration of gratitude, with performers reminiscing about Dad’s influence. Jackson Browne fondly recalled Dad’s impeccable Jimmy Stewart impressions and how he introduced Browne to Gibson guitars. Crosby affectionately referred to Dad as his “guitar guru,” highlighting the profound impact he had on the music community. The camaraderie and admiration expressed by the artists that night reflected a deep connection with my father, who had dedicated his life to supporting musicians and nurturing their talents.
Before the concert turned sentimental, the comedic duo Spinal Tap took the stage, injecting a dose of humor with their rendition of “Big Bottom.” As the night unfolded with joyful performances and heartfelt tributes, the music industry rallied around my father, embodying the spirit of generosity and friendship that defined his legacy.
Fred Walecki’s influence extended far beyond the benefit concert, as Rolling Stone acknowledged him as a key figure in music history. Despite his name not being widely recognized by the general public, Dad’s impact resonated with those he had touched over the decades. From his early days working at Westwood Music to his instrumental role in shaping the careers of iconic musicians, Fred Walecki remained a pillar of support and inspiration in the music world.
The legacy of Westwood Music, founded by Dad’s father Hermann, was a testament to the Walecki family’s musical heritage. Through generations of musicians, artists, and innovators, the store became a hub of creativity and community. Dad’s upbringing in the world of instruments and musicians nurtured his passion for music and his commitment to helping others realize their musical dreams.
As I reflect on the profound impact my father had on the music industry, I am reminded of the rich tapestry of memories and experiences that shaped his journey. From his early days at Westwood Music to the outpouring of support at the benefit concert, Fred Walecki’s legacy remains a testament to the enduring power of music and friendship.
