Preview: Ratboys Excite Fans on Lollapalooza Eve with Electric Performance
Aftershows before big music festivals like Lollapalooza always have a special aura surrounding them. People seem to be in higher spirits, radiating excitement and social energy, which in turn elevates the concert experience for everyone involved. Ratboys, a Chicago-based indie rock band deeply rooted in the city’s music scene, embodies this spirit and connection with their fans. Alongside established acts like Wilco and Beach Bunny, Ratboys have carved out a niche for themselves as local legends with a growing national and international following.
With five albums under their belt and a sixth on the way, Ratboys have progressively honed their craft over the years, with their latest release, The Window, garnering critical acclaim and bringing them newfound recognition in the indie music scene. The album represents a culmination of their artistic vision, blending elements of post-country and midwest indie rock into a cohesive and mature sound that showcases their growth as musicians. Each album in Ratboys’ discography has been a stepping stone towards this evolutionary leap, but it is The Window that truly solidifies their place in the music landscape.
As a recent convert to Ratboys’ music, I had the opportunity to witness their pre-Lollapalooza show at Sleeping Village, where they were supported by the talented indie outfit Hemlock. Hailing from Chicago and led by singer-songwriter Carolina Chauffe, Hemlock’s music is a hidden gem in the city’s music scene. Their album “444” stands out as a testament to their musical prowess and artistic vision, featuring a collection of songs that is both intentional and cohesive. Hemlock’s live performances are marked by a sense of community and intimacy, with personal voicemails from friends and family woven into their sets, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for their audiences.
During their set, Hemlock showcased their musical range with a mix of original tracks and a unique cover of “Headphones On” by Addison Rae, infused with a country twist. Beyond their music, Hemlock’s commitment to social causes, particularly their support for Gaza and Palestinians, sets them apart in the indie music landscape. Through their music and activism, they aim to raise awareness and support for marginalized communities, channeling their earnings from shows to aid families in need.
In a music industry often overshadowed by commercial interests, bands like Ratboys and Hemlock serve as a reminder of the power of grassroots music and community-driven initiatives. Their dedication to their craft and commitment to social causes not only elevate their music but also inspire others to use their platform for positive change. As I left the venue that night, filled with the energy and emotion of the music, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to witness the magic of live music and the transformative power of art in bringing people together.
