Chubby Checker, the legendary performer famous for his rendition of “The Twist” in 1960, recently explained his decision to skip the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction after waiting almost 40 years for the honor. Despite being eligible for induction since the hall’s inception in 1986, Checker was only nominated for induction this year. In a clip shared by Future Rock Legends from a performance in Des Plaines, Illinois, Checker revealed his reasons for opting out of the prestigious ceremony.

Expressing his passion for being in front of a live audience rather than a television one, Checker instructed his manager to ensure that he could continue doing what he loves most – performing for a live crowd. When his manager scheduled a show for him on the day of the induction, Checker claimed that the hall dismissed his commitment. Emphasizing his dedication to his performances, he emphasized that he never forgets about his shows, even on such monumental occasions as an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Recalling his childhood ambitions of becoming a star, Checker explained that every time he steps on stage, his dream is reignited. Despite criticisms of being seen as old or retired, Checker continues to defy stereotypes and proves his dedication to his craft. Throughout his career, Checker contributed to the popularity of dance crazes like the Pony and Limbo dances with hits like “Pony Time” and “Limbo Rock.”

One of Checker’s most iconic hits, “The Twist,” originally by Hank Ballard and the Midnighters, became a massive success in 1960. The song held the record for topping Billboard’s list of all-time No. 1 singles on the Hot 100 charts from 2008 to 2020 when it was surpassed by The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights.” Checker has long been an advocate for greater radio play of his music and protested for more recognition of his contributions outside of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremonies in the early 2000s.

Despite his long wait for induction, Checker will finally be inducted into the hall alongside other music legends such as Cyndi Lauper, OutKast, the White Stripes, Joe Cocker, and Soundgarden in a ceremony in Los Angeles this November. Accepting a statue from the hall at his Illinois show, Checker expressed gratitude for the recognition and vowed to cherish all the positive moments in his life as he passes through the hall’s home of Cleveland, Ohio.
