In these challenging times, we witness Moviola’s new album, Earthbound, starting with a sense of ominous skies hanging over our heads. The opening track, “Dark Cloud,” introduces a fleeting threat swiftly replaced by Greg Bonnell’s lyrics urging listeners to seek change and uncover a better version of themselves amidst the prevailing adversity.

According to Jerry Dannemiller, who, along with Ted Hattemer, sat down for an interview at Gemut Biergarten, the songs on the record encapsulate the current moment’s essence. While the album captures a world-weariness, there is no sense of resignation. “There’s a certain optimism to it, along with this reality that we’re living in really messed-up times,” Dannemiller states, emphasizing the band’s choice to confront the chaos through their artistry. The message is clear: one can either retreat or create, and Moviola opts for the latter.

Earthbound does not solely focus on political commentary, although songs like “Hillbilly Effigy” take aim at Vice President JD Vance. The album broadens its scope to encompass themes ranging from lifelong regrets to the realization of mortality. Moreover, the title track emphasizes the importance of facing reality head-on rather than living in a fantasy world. Hattemer points out that the track encourages listeners to ground themselves in earthly matters, showcasing the album’s introspective and relatable content.

The upcoming record release show at Used Kids on Saturday, Aug. 23, supported by Long Odds, promises to be a celebration of Moviola’s resilience and creativity. The band, comprising Bonnell, Hattemer, Jake Housh, and Scotty Tabachnick, will bring their introspective tunes to life on stage, offering an immersive experience for listeners. Amidst the chaos of the times, Moviola’s dedication to their craft shines through, motivating audiences to confront the challenges around them and seek solace in artistry.

Moviola continues to find hope amidst trying times, delivering a message of resilience and determination through their music. With Earthbound, the band invites listeners to reflect on life’s uncertainties and challenges, offering a sense of unity and understanding during tumultuous times. By weaving personal experiences and societal commentary into their songs, Moviola creates a space for introspection and connection, showcasing the transformative power of music in navigating the complexities of the modern world.
