Disney announces opening date for ‘Zootopia’ attraction and updates coaster plans
Disney World recently shared updates on several projects, including the grand opening date of the “Zootopia: Better Together” attraction and details on revamped roller coasters. The news was delivered in a quirky manner by a group of Muppets led by Kermit the Frog.
The first attraction to debut will be “Zootopia: Better Together,” a 3D film located at Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park. This new experience will open to the public on Nov. 7 and is set to replace “It’s Tough to Be a Bug.” The 9-minute movie will feature elements from its predecessor and incorporate surprises centered around Zoogether Day, as revealed by Danny Hanke, senior creative director. Additionally, a new character named Heidi Howler, a wolf host with vibrant energy, will be showcased in the film, along with characters from “Zootopia 2.” According to Hanke, the same animators who worked on the movie contributed to the attraction. “We are Zoonited,” a new song, will be featured, and meet-and-greet areas with Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps will be available in line with the release of “Zootopia 2.”
During a media preview at Epcot, Disney executives discussed the forthcoming changes to two roller coasters. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in the Magic Kingdom, currently closed for refurbishment, will have enhancements such as a new early scene with hundreds of bats in a bat cave and rainbow caverns filled with natural phosphorus pools. The transformation will signal a shift in theme to a man versus mountain narrative, with the mountain defending its gold from miners. At Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster will undergo a transition from an Aerosmith theme to a Muppet-based storyline. The exterior of the coaster will receive a vibrant new look, and the ride will be reimagined with Muppet characters taking over the Electric Mayhem band scenes.
The presentation featured Dr. Teeth discussing the new storyline, where Electric Mayhem band members are preparing for a concert while Scooter’s uncle takes over their label, G Force Records. The plot will involve Scooter finding a fast way to transport guests to the concert, mirroring the concept of the superstretch limo-inspired ride vehicles. The new version of the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster is scheduled to open in 2026, although no closing date has been announced for the original Aerosmith version.
