Arctic Monkeys recorded at Chapel Studios along with other bands
In a tranquil Lincolnshire village, an old Victorian chapel stands as a reminder of a bygone era. Once a place of worship, this quaint building now serves a different purpose – it is a haven for musical legends. Amidst the brick walls, echoes of rock and pop music can be heard, resonating with the melodies of some of Britain’s most famous artists.
This unique studio, known as Chapel Studios in South Thoresby, has welcomed the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs, Wet Wet Wet, and The Darkness among its congregation. Owner Andy Dransfield recalls the unmistakable sound of a hit being crafted during Kaiser Chiefs’ sessions at the studio. Chapel Studios offers a residential experience, allowing artists to live and work on-site for extended periods.
Located amidst the picturesque Lincolnshire countryside, the studio’s rural setting provides a retreat from the public eye. Celebrities like Wet Wet Wet have appreciated the tranquility and privacy, only occasionally interrupted by the curious gaze of a passing postman. The local community remains unfazed by the star-studded clientele, enabling artists to mingle with the locals without drawing excessive attention to themselves.
Chapel Studios’ origins trace back to Andy’s humble beginnings, recording music with friends in a small garden shed over five decades ago. The makeshift setup, with one friend stationed outside the shed to capture the sounds, eventually evolved into a professional recording venture. Andy reminisces about the challenges posed by the close proximity of an old people’s home and the lack of adequate soundproofing in those early days.
The transformation of the chapel into a recording studio began when Andy and his musician friend Bram Tchaikovsky purchased the building in the early 1980s. Their ambitious plans to convert the chapel into a studio involved a steep learning curve, as they navigated concrete deliveries and rushed to meet construction deadlines. Despite the initial setbacks, Chapel Studios opened its doors in 1982 and quickly attracted major artists like Simple Minds to its premises.
Over the years, The Darkness also left their mark on the studio, with anecdotes of lead singer Justin Hawkins recording parts of their debut album in the buff. Although the specifics remain shrouded in mystery, the studio’s colorful history has become a part of its legacy. Now, as Andy contemplates selling Chapel Studios to fresh ownership, he reflects on the studio’s rich heritage and looks forward to passing the torch to a new generation of music enthusiasts.
With a price tag of £1.25 million, Chapel Studios stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of creativity and collaboration that has thrived within its walls. As this iconic piece of musical history awaits its next chapter, the indelible melodies and memories crafted within its confines continue to resonate with music lovers around the world.
