40-Year-Old Receives Partially Suspended Sentence for Stealing Phones at Nova Rock

A man accused of stealing phones, wallets, and cash at this year’s Nova Rock festival in Burgenland received a partially conditional prison sentence. The judgment is not yet final. The 40-year-old defendant was handed a one-year prison sentence on Monday at the Eisenstadt Regional Court, with eight months of it being conditional. Allegedly stealing 31 phones, wallets, and cash at the music festival last June, the man was apprehended with goods valued at around 18,630 euros. During the court proceedings, he admitted his guilt.

The defendant cited financial losses and gambling at a casino as reasons for his theft, intending to sell the stolen phones in Romania. While expressing remorse for his actions, he clarified the circumstances leading to his crimes. The man took steps to discard SIM cards that caused the phones to ring incessantly, along with phone cases, a driver’s license, and ID card that were deemed unnecessary. However, he decided to keep a credit card that was later returned to its rightful owner at the festival site.

Notably, the defendant had been in pretrial detention since his arrest at Nova Rock in June, a period that would be credited towards his sentence. A nominal fine of ten euros was imposed on the defendant for disposing of a festival-goer’s phone case.
