Chinese band Haya embarked on a demanding tour schedule in 2024, traveling to 18 cities across China. Despite the physical and mental challenges that touring presented, the experience proved to be a wellspring of inspiration for the band’s musical endeavors. Lead singer and songwriter Daiqingtana described how the tour allowed her to gain a fresh perspective on life, love, and the intricacies of the human experience through the close interactions with their audiences.

The band channeled this newfound creativity into crafting new songs, culminating in an EP titled The Returning Wind. Daiqingtana expressed how the process of writing music and rehearsing reinvigorated her inner creativity and sense of vitality, reminiscent of the feelings she had when she first embarked on her musical journey. This surge of inspiration led to the creation of songs that formed the core of their nationwide tour in 2024, where they performed in cities such as Beijing, Hangzhou, Guangzhou, and Shanghai.

One of the notable songs that emerged from this period of creative growth is “Touching You,” a deeply emotional and introspective piece that stemmed from a moment of solitude during the tour. Daiqingtana shared that the song explores the themes of intimacy and connection on spiritual and emotional levels, emphasizing the importance of truly seeing and loving one another. Her husband, Quan Sheng, highlighted that the song also symbolizes a connection with nature, drawing parallels between their outdoor performances on the grasslands of Inner Mongolia and the raw, emotional essence of the music.

Another song that emerged from this period is “Waiting,” sung in Mongolian and marked by a departure from their traditional musical style towards a more contemporary pop sound. The band members, drawing from their ethnic Mongolian roots, aimed to pay homage to the music of their childhood while infusing modern elements to create a unique and emotionally resonant piece. The live performances of their new songs added an extra layer of depth and emotion, connecting with audiences on a personal level and evoking feelings that varied depending on individual life experiences.

Founded in 2006, Haya has always been dedicated to creating world music inspired by Mongolian traditions. Lead by Quan Sheng, a pioneer in blending traditional Chinese and ethnic Mongolian music with modern influences, the band has pushed boundaries and garnered critical acclaim for their innovative approach to music. Their award-winning albums, such as “Wolf Totem” and “Silent Sky,” have solidified their place in the music industry, appealing to a diverse audience and showcasing the universal qualities of human music.

As Haya continues to evolve and explore new musical horizons, their commitment to preserving their roots while embracing modern influences remains steadfast. Through their music, they hope to transcend cultural and ethnic boundaries, uniting diverse musical traditions while celebrating the unique identities of each tradition. In a world filled with uncertainty and change, Haya stands as a testament to the unifying power of music and the enduring spirit of artistic expression.
