Instrumental albums have a unique ability to transport listeners to different settings and eras, often possessing a cinematic quality. Renowned for his work on The Ghosts Of Pripyat, Steve Rothery is a master in this genre. In collaboration with Thorsten Quaeschning, a versatile multi-instrumentalist known for his contributions to Tangerine Dream, the two artists create a mesmerizing blend of sounds.

Quaeschning, proficient in keyboards, guitar, percussion, and flute, stepped into the role as Tangerine Dream’s leader following Edgar Froese’s passing. Their album Quantum Gate, led by Quaeschning, received critical acclaim, building on Froese’s legacy and weaving together elements synonymous with Tangerine Dream’s style. Delving into Raum, listeners are immersed in expansive, atmospheric compositions reminiscent of the band’s earlier catalog.

The dynamic partnership between Rothery and Quaeschning blossomed after their initial meeting in Berlin post a Marillion concert. Following a collaborative jam session at Marillion’s studio, Racket Club, their musical synergy was evident. With Elbow’s skilled drummer, Alex Reeves, rounding out the trio, Gentō emerges as a finely crafted album where each note from Reeves’ drums resonates with precision.

Vanishing Point sets the tone for the album, taking listeners on an introspective journey. Quaeschning’s ethereal sounds in Part I serve as a prelude, while Part II launches listeners into a space-like trance. Rothery’s intricate guitar work intertwines seamlessly with Quaeschning’s keyboards, creating a vivid landscape for the mind to wander.

The title track, accompanied by a captivating video, pays homage to Tangerine Dream’s legacy, evoking nocturnal commutes through its pulsating rhythms and hypnotic melodies. Drawing inspiration from Rothery’s passion for photography, the album’s song titles reflect themes of perception and image capture, offering a kaleidoscopic musical experience.

Gentō’s tracks are a testament to Rothery and Quaeschning’s artistry, painting a vibrant sonic tapestry that transcends traditional genres. From dreamy soundscapes to rock-infused compositions, the album showcases their mastery in creating ambient, immersive music. Reeves’ rhythmic finesse adds depth and nuance to each track, underscoring the trio’s collective brilliance.

Fans of Marillion will find Gentō akin to The Ghosts Of Pripyat, highlighting Rothery’s versatility beyond the band’s repertoire. Quaeschning’s innovative textures and keyboard wizardry complement Rothery’s guitar prowess, resulting in a harmonious interplay that captivates listeners. Bioscope’s debut album is a testament to the trio’s talent and creativity, leaving a lasting impression on those who embark on its musical journey.
