Yellowcard achieves first number one on Billboard Alternative Chart after 22 years
Yellowcard has finally achieved a significant milestone in their career as their single “Better Days” has soared to the top of the Billboard Alternative Airplay chart, landing them their first-ever No. 1 spot. What sets this achievement apart is the fact that it took the band a staggering 22 years to reach this pinnacle, making it the longest journey from first chart entry to securing the top position in history.
The song made a remarkable leap from fifth place to claim the No. 1 spot on August 30th, cementing their status as chart-toppers. This triumph not only solidifies their place in the music industry but also breaks the previous record held by Fall Out Boy, whose climb to the top took 17 years and nine months.
Yellowcard first appeared on the charts back in 2003 with their track “Way Away,” which peaked at No. 25. Despite coming close in 2006 with “Lights and Sounds” reaching No. 4, the coveted top spot remained elusive until now. The radio airwaves were inundated with the sounds of “Better Days,” with the song being played a total of 2,148 times from August 17th to 23rd, according to Mediabase data. This extensive exposure propelled the track above Green Day’s “One Eyed Bastard” and Foo Fighters’ “Today’s Song,” clinching the coveted No. 1 position.
The success of “Better Days” didn’t stop at the alternative radio scene, as the song also made its mark on the Rock & Alternative Airplay chart, climbing to No. 14 and attracting 2.5 million listeners. This significant growth represents an 11% increase in engagement, as reported by Luminate’s data.
In a year that has seen an influx of new talent, Yellowcard joins the ranks of nine other artists who have claimed their first No. 1 on the Alternative Airplay chart in 2025. The last time this many new names dominated the charts was in 1997, showcasing the ever-evolving landscape of the music industry.
Looking ahead, Yellowcard’s future looks bright as they have recently signed with Better Noise Music for their upcoming album, fittingly titled “Better Days.” This release follows their self-titled album from 2016, which peaked at No. 5 on the Top Alternative Albums chart. With their latest achievement propelling them to new heights, Yellowcard’s enduring success is proof that perseverance and dedication pay off in the long run.
