New short documentary explores how a mother embraces her transgender son with love
A mother discovered the true meaning of acceptance when her child came out as gay and later as a transgender male. In a groundbreaking documentary from the Trevor Project’s Learn With Love series, Haylin, a marriage and family therapist, shared her journey of growth and understanding with her son Mat.
Reflecting on her conservative Christian upbringing, Haylin believed she was supportive of her child when he came out, but their journey towards acceptance was far from easy. Mat’s identity struggles were met with resistance, leading to conflicts about his self-expression. Haylin’s realization that she had much to learn about LGBTQ+ acceptance was a turning point in their relationship.
Mat, now 17, highlighted his mother’s shift from being supportive but not fully understanding to becoming a fierce advocate for his identity. Haylin’s participation in Pride events did not prepare her for the challenges of accepting her son’s trans identity. Over time, she recognized the importance of gender-affirming care in Mat’s journey towards self-acceptance and empowerment. His testosterone treatment played a crucial role in his personal and artistic growth.
Despite facing criticism from family and friends, Haylin stood by her son’s side and actively defended his identity and treatment. Through founding Spill the Tea CafĂ©, a mental health clinic and safe space for LGBTQ+ youth, she not only supported her son but also contributed to the community. Haylin emphasized the significance of drowning out negative voices and truly listening to one’s child during their transition process.
For parents navigating similar journeys, Haylin emphasized the essential role of acceptance in a child’s well-being. She stressed that validation and love are key to a trans child’s survival and flourishing. Mat echoed his mother’s sentiments, expressing gratitude for the unwavering support that allowed him to explore his identity and personality freely.
The documentary, part of the Trevor Project’s campaign to raise awareness and reduce suicide rates among LGBTQ+ youth, sheds light on the struggles and triumphs of transgender individuals. LGBTQ+ young people face disproportionately high rates of suicide attempts, but supportive parents like Haylin play a pivotal role in creating safe and accepting environments for their children.
Mat’s journey serves as a powerful reminder that acceptance and love are fundamental in nurturing a child’s authentic self. Through empathy, understanding, and advocacy, families can create spaces where LGBTQ+ youth feel seen, heard, and valued, ultimately fostering a more inclusive and compassionate society.
