Exploring Feminine Geologists: Reflections on Every Film I Watched

0

As I delved into the world of geology, I found myself reflecting on the limited portrayal of female geologists in movies. My perception had been shaped by iconic films like Volcano and Jurassic Park, featuring noteworthy female geologists. However, they failed to capture the essence of the profession accurately. Wondering if current students have better examples to be inspired by and pondering the commonalities among these on-screen portrayals, I embarked on a mission to watch every movie showcasing female geologists.

My journey led me through 25 films showcasing the exploits of 27 female geologists as central or supporting characters over six decades. Among various traits observed in these characters, curiosity, resilience in crisis, intelligence, and dedication to their work were recurrent themes. Interestingly, I couldn’t help but notice that the main character in my novel, Sarah, embodied many of these traits. It was intriguing to reflect on whether these portrayals had subconsciously influenced my writing.

Diving deeper, I noticed a trend where female geologists from different disciplines like paleontology, seismology, and volcanology took the center stage. However, palaeontologists seemed to be particularly popular, potentially credited to the influence of movies like Jurassic Park. It became apparent that diversity within these portrayals was lacking, with minimal representation of women of color and those with disabilities. In a way, these limitations painted a skewed picture of the field, failing to capture its true essence.

The analytical side of me witnessed the overt or subtle sexism prevalent in certain films, especially comedy movies or those featuring James Bond. Female geologists were sometimes depicted as mere objects of desire, diminishing their professional roles. However, I observed a shift in recent post MeToo era films, shedding light on structural sexism and portraying female geologists more authentically.

Despite these challenges, a positive trend emerged in the portrayal of female geologists as protagonists in movies. The 2020s witnessed a surge in such narratives, showcasing well-developed characters engaged in authentic geological work. Films like Unconformity and Ammonite highlighted the rigorous and meticulous aspects of geological research, offering a more realistic depiction of the profession.

As I reflect on my cinematic journey exploring representations of female geologists, one thing becomes clear – these narratives play a crucial role in shaping our perception of professions and individuals. While certain stereotypes persist, there is a noticeable shift towards more accurate and insightful portrayals of female geologists on screen. It’s heartening to witness the evolution of these narratives and the increasing recognition of women’s contributions and capabilities in the field of geology.
