Video captures tense moments before Ukrainian refugee fatally stabbed on Charlotte light rail
WCCS FM 101.1 and AM 1160, The Voice of Indiana County, recently released a chilling surveillance video capturing the moments leading up to the tragic death of 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska. The footage, made public by the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS), shows Zarutska boarding the Lynx Blue line on a Friday night, August 22. The unsettling video reveals Zarutska clad in her pizzeria uniform, engrossed in her phone, with a man donning a red hoodie seated behind her.
Approximately four minutes into the footage, the man suddenly draws a knife and viciously stabs Zarutska three times, one of the blows directed towards her neck. In a heart-wrenching moment, Zarutska instinctively reaches for her wounded neck as blood streams onto the train floor, tragically succumbing to her injuries shortly after. The perpetrator, later identified as 34-year-old Decarlos Brown, callously walks through the rail car post-assault, sheds his sweatshirt, and calmly awaits by the doors, unfazed by the horrified passengers witnessing the brutal attack.
In just moments, the life of a young woman, who had fled her war-stricken homeland, was senselessly taken in a vicious and random act of violence. Brown, with a troubling criminal history spanning over a decade, faced charges ranging from felony larceny to robbery with a dangerous weapon.
