Brighton-based School Disco has released the latest single “Happen” through Krautpop!. The track, a brooding and hypnotic cut with a hint of 70s prog, showcases the band’s ambition through an experimental and immersive soundscape. Known for their explosive live performances, including opening for Wolf Alice, Lime Garden, and Froth, School Disco delivers high-energy shows with rich musicality.

“Happen” was recorded live at Farm Road Studios, engineered by Jake Smallwood and frontman Rory Lethbridge, and mastered by Harry Hayes. The single captures raw immediacy with minimal overdubs, blending experimental audacity with emotional depth. Inspired by Black Sabbath, CAN, and various sci-fi and horror themes, the track explores darker, more contemplative territory. Sparse yet impactful lyrics float over swirling guitar melodies, intricate time signatures, and bursts of fuzzy energy, leading to a dynamic instrumental break that highlights the band’s stellar musicianship.

Vocalist and guitarist Rory Lethbridge reflects on the genesis of the track:

“Happen” was the first song crafted in a new batch of tracks we were developing. Its foundations were written and recorded in a single day while jamming at Studio Nunn. We created and recorded the song specifically for a show during Andy’s Triptych weekender at Love Thy Neighbour, where lathe cuts are made for each night. As we didn’t have material for it, we had to create something new. ‘Happen’ transitioned us from Denton Rock to our upcoming work.”

The single, inspired by legendary bands like Meddle-era Pink Floyd and King Crimson, as well as contemporary psych acts like Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, demonstrates School Disco’s inventive spirit and steadfast creativity. With nods to classic rock influences and a willingness to embrace new sounds, the band forges a unique sonic path that sets them apart in today’s music scene.
