Support floods in for ’90s country band after cancer surgery complication
The Mavericks, a popular ’90s country band known for hits like “O What a Thrill,” “All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down,” and “Here Comes the Rain,” made the difficult decision to cancel more shows due to frontman Raul Malo’s recovery from cancer surgery. Recently, the band announced the cancellation of their September 4 and 6 performances in Las Vegas and Santa Fe as Malo needed time to rest after surgery earlier in the month.
Unfortunately, Malo’s recovery hit a setback, and on September 11, The Mavericks revealed that his doctors advised him to avoid traveling entirely. This led to the cancellation of concerts in New Haven, CT, Verona, NY, and Boston, MA, scheduled for September 11-13. The band expressed regret over the cancellations and expressed gratitude to fans for their continued support during this challenging time.
Messages of support and love flooded in from fans and fellow artists, demonstrating a strong outpouring of care for Malo. Singer-songwriter Jason Isbell offered comforting words, while other fans shared personal stories of their connections to the band’s music. One widow even shared how she purchased tickets to honor her late husband, a longtime fan of The Mavericks.
Supporters took to social media to send healing energy and prayers to Malo, emphasizing the importance of his health and the hope for a full recovery. Many expressed anticipation for Malo’s eventual return and the resumption of The Mavericks’ performances. The band’s sincere gesture of canceling shows to prioritize Malo’s well-being resonated deeply with fans, who continue to shower the frontman with messages of faith and positivity.
Malo’s battle with stage 4 colon cancer has been a challenging yet transformative journey, as he shared in an interview earlier this year. Despite facing his diagnosis head-on, Malo remains optimistic and resilient, drawing strength from his openness about his health journey. While he takes time to recuperate, fans with tickets to the canceled shows will still have the opportunity to enjoy performances by Dwight Yoakam and opener Philip Bowen as scheduled.
The ongoing support and encouragement from fans reflect a deep admiration for Malo and The Mavericks, emphasizing the band’s enduring impact on their lives. In the face of setbacks, the outpouring of positivity and love serves as a reminder of the strong bond between the band and their loyal fan base, inspiring hope for Malo’s continued recovery and a return to the stage in the future.
