Vince Neil from Motley Crue Shares Struggle with Stroke: Had to Relearn Walking
Motley Crue frontman Vince Neil recently opened up about his experience battling a stroke that he suffered in December 2024. This health scare led to the postponement of the band’s scheduled Las Vegas show. Neil, age 64, detailed how he went to bed feeling fine on Christmas night but woke up the next morning with the left side of his body affected by the stroke.
In an interview with the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Neil shared the challenging journey he faced in recovering from the stroke. He mentioned the impact on his mobility, stating that he had to relearn how to walk. The stroke forced Neil to put his performance on hold, with Motley Crue’s residency shows at Park MGM being rescheduled to later dates in September and October.
Neil described the tough months post-stroke, highlighting how he gradually progressed from relying on a wheelchair to eventually learning how to walk with a cane. Despite facing obstacles in his recovery, Neil remained determined to get back on stage and perform. He credited intensive physical therapy for aiding in his rehabilitation process and shared that he is now around 90 to 95 percent recovered from the ordeal.
The musician emphasized the importance of perseverance and dedication during his recovery, as he navigated the challenges of retraining his brain to coordinate with his body. While doctors initially expressed doubts about his ability to return to performing, Neil remained steadfast in his goal to make a comeback. He expressed pride in overcoming the odds and regaining his strength, even learning how to run again.
Due to his health scare, Motley Crue also had to delay their appearance at the Boardwalk Rock Festival in Ocean City, Maryland. Neil and the band prioritized his health and well-being, ensuring that he could return to the stage at full capacity. The band’s Las Vegas residency, initially planned to kick off in October 2024, eventually began in September 2025, with Motley Crue headlining alongside Def Leppard.
Neil’s resilience and determination in overcoming the effects of the stroke serve as an inspiration to fans and fellow musicians. Despite the initial challenges he faced, Neil has made significant progress in his recovery and remains focused on his passion for performing.
