Butterfly, a beloved Korean indie rock band, has recently released a new EP titled “Outside Joy Purple” after an eight-year hiatus. This EP marks the 25th anniversary of Butterfly’s debut on Line 3. The band consists of Nam Sang-ah, Sung Ki-wan, and Kim Nam-yoon, who have returned to the music scene with this new release.

The album “Outside Joy Purple” delves into the concept of finding joy in the small moments of life that surround us, akin to the unseen light at the end of a rainbow. Butterfly on Line 3 has always strived to convey scenes through sound itself rather than relying on explicit narratives, and this EP continues that tradition. Nam Sang-ah’s unique husky vocals add a dreamy texture to the music, creating an atmosphere that is both poetic and psychedelic.

Following their last performance in 2019, the band members pursued different paths before reuniting for this EP. Nam Sang-ah was running a Korean restaurant in France, Kim Nam-yoon was busy with drama music, and Sung Ki-wan was absent from the music scene for nine years. Their reunion was marked by a stellar performance at the Pentaport Rock Festival last month, where they showcased their new songs.

The album features a range of sounds and influences, including fast bpm drums in “Pyo Seon Rainbow” and a ballad sentiment in the title track “20 years ago today.” The incorporation of synthesizers, keyboards, and flutes adds retro textures to the music, creating a laid-back and tranquil atmosphere not typically found in their previous works.

Butterfly on Line 3 has always been known for their experimental approach, incorporating elements of noise, psychedelics, and electronic music into their rock-inspired sound. This album takes their creativity to new heights, showcasing their evolution as artists who are unafraid to push boundaries.

In a surprising turn of events, Melon Track Zero selected Butterfly on Line 3 as the artist of the month, marking the first time in six years that the band has received this recognition. This honor is part of Melon’s indie music revitalization project, highlighting the band’s enduring influence in the Korean music scene.

Overall, Butterfly’s latest EP “Outside Joy Purple” is a testament to their creativity, innovation, and unwavering passion for their craft. This release is a reminder of the band’s enduring legacy in Korean indie rock and their ability to captivate audiences with their unique sound.
