Review: Wolfheart’s ‘Draconian Darkness II’ EP Shines with Metal Brilliance

When it comes to the metal subgenre known as melodeath, Wolfheart stands out as one of the best in the category. They effortlessly blend dark and heavy riffs with beautiful melodic elements, consistently bringing something fresh and exciting with each new release. With a history of releasing albums every two years on average, fans were pleasantly surprised by the EP release of Draconian Darkness II, which serves as a continuation of last year’s orchestral riff wonderland of Draconian Darkness.

The EP features two new songs that seamlessly continue the album’s thematic elements. The first track, “Carnivore,” is a high-energy headbanger with dynamic elements such as double bass, intense guitar riffs, and a brief guitar solo. Layered vocals add depth and atmosphere to the song, creating a captivating listening experience despite its relatively short runtime. On the other hand, the second new song, “Forefathers,” introduces orchestral elements like strings and keys that beautifully complement the varying styles of screamed vocals, resulting in a grand and powerful composition that reflects the song’s title.

In addition to the new tracks, the EP includes three different renditions of songs from the original album. The live version of “Burning Sky” captures an electrifying stage presence with its well-produced sound, while “The Gale (Acoustic)” offers a more raw and emotive interpretation of an already emotional piece. Lastly, “The Grave (Orchestral)” presents a unique orchestral version of the album’s single, showcasing Wolfheart’s ability to transform their music into a classical instrumental masterpiece with clean production and a nod to bands like Septicflesh and Fleshgod Apocalypse.

Overall, Wolfheart’s EP, Draconian Darkness II, serves as a solid addition to their discography, complementing the main course that was Draconian Darkness. The new tracks feel like bonus content that can stand on their own, making it a worthwhile listen for fans of reimagined songs and the orchestra-heavy melodeath subgenre. Released on September 19, 2025, via Reigning Phoenix Music, this EP is a must-have for any Wolfheart enthusiast looking to experience a new dimension of their favorite band’s sound.
