By Cheryl A. Cuddahy | | CorrespondentPUBLISHED: September 21, 2025 at 3:19 AM EDTLUNENBURG — Step into the past through the power of music when Sultana performs at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, at the Lunenburg Public Library, 1023 Massachusetts Ave.
Sultana — featuring the duo of Jon and Li Waterman — combines music and storytelling to bring history and legend to life.
Their original songs and narratives transport audiences through time, from the earliest known author to the mysteries of Arthurian legend, the lost libraries of Alexandria and Nalanda, a medieval battlefield, the Old West, and even stories rooted in Massachusetts and the Merrimack Valley.
Jon Waterman, a seasoned songwriter and musician, has performed nationwide with programs such as “A Journey Through the Roots of American Popular Music” and “History and Legends Through Song”. function dfm_stn_player_script_id_sad7cvdo( getS2NApiForPlayer ) {

His original piece “Sultana,” recounting the Civil War-era steamboat disaster, is featured at the Sultana Disaster Museum in Marion, Ark.
Li Waterman, a classically trained guitarist and vocalist, adds depth with her background in classical and alternative music, having formerly led the Rhode Island band Alien Tesh. A visual artist as well, she is a graduate of Boston’s Museum School.
More than just a concert, the performance offers a time-traveling musical tapestry that blends fact, myth, and melody into an unforgettable evening.
“I enjoy sharing with the audience and seeing people have a good time,” said Jon Waterman. “I imagine that’s probably true for all performers. I guess some performers want to share something of themselves that people can relate to. For me, it’s not so much of that, it’s more wanting to have people saying -— ‘wow that was cool!’ — like a good movie. If people are saying that after a song, or a show and thinking about it later— for me that’s the best feeling as a performer.”

This free concert is supported in part by a grant from the Lunenburg Cultural Council, a local agency supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.
Sultana will also perform at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Bigelow Free Public Library, 54 Walnut St., Clinton.
