Elliott Landy to Release Two-Volume Book of ‘The Band Photographs: 1968-1969’
Legendary photographer Elliott Landy is set to release a new book featuring his iconic photographs of The Band. The upcoming book, titled The Band Photographs: 1968-1969 Two-Volume set, is a hardcover edition that spans 12×12 inches. It consists of a combined 352 pages and contains nearly 400 photographs. Scheduled for release on November 25, 2025, the book is currently available for pre-order in the United States and Canada through the publisher Weldon Owen.
Landy’s photographs of The Band are synonymous with the iconic group. He captured the legendary photos during the release of their debut album, Music From Big Pink in 1968, and their self-titled album, The Band, in 1969. Landy reminisces about his unique access to The Band during that time, living in Woodstock, NY. As a friend of the band, he had the liberty to take candid pictures of them, resulting in more than 10,000 film frames. However, only a fraction of these photos had been published before his 2015 book, The Band Photographs: 1968-1969.
The release of the first volume set a record as the highest funded music photography book in Kickstarter history. The Band holds a revered status in rock ‘n’ roll history for their innovative music, pivotal role in Bob Dylan’s career, and the iconic concert film, The Last Waltz. The years of 1968-69, which produced critically acclaimed albums like Big Pink and The Band, have remained shrouded in mystery. Landy’s photographs provide a unique glimpse into their world that is unparalleled by any other documentation.
Volume 2 of The Band Photographs came to fruition as Landy revisited old prints and unearthed unseen shots from the same period. These images encapsulate the innocence and excitement of the band’s early days before the pressures of fame took their toll. The photographs offer an intimate look at the band’s camaraderie and the creative process behind their music, capturing candid moments from grocery shopping to recording sessions.
Landy’s photographs take viewers on a journey through The Band’s life, from the mundane to the extraordinary. The images transport us to their homes in Woodstock, inviting us to witness their daily routines, discussions, and musical collaborations. They serve as a testament to the band members’ friendship, love for life, and the sheer joy of making music together.
Elliott Landy’s illustrious career spans over 50 years and has left an indelible mark on rock ‘n’ roll photography. His work at the 1969 Woodstock festival, portraits of Bob Dylan, and Van Morrison’s album cover for Moondance are just a few highlights from his extensive portfolio. Landy’s photographs have graced the covers of major magazines, exhibited in museums worldwide, and collected in numerous books. His upcoming release of The Band Photographs: 1968-1969 Two-Volume set is a testament to his enduring legacy as a visual storyteller in the world of music.
