Madra Salach breaks tradition with humorous “Blue & Gold” track
The captivating debut single from Madra Salach embodies a blend of traditional folk elements with a modern, edgy twist. Drawing inspiration from renowned folk artists like Lankum and Lisa O’Neill, the band reimagines and reinvents classic folk standards, infusing them with contemporary textures and tension reminiscent of post-rock music.
While rooted in folk songwriting, the band’s sound is a fusion of various genres, incorporating electronic, ambient, and shoegaze influences. Bands like Boards of Canada, My Bloody Valentine, and Just Mustard serve as key inspirations for their music. Bandleader Paul Banks, described as the connective force within the group, incorporates analog synths, layered pedal distortions, and tape loops to create a mesmerizing sonic landscape that complements the track’s dissonant drones and intricate guitar melodies.
Exploring the decision to delve into experimental Irish folk, Banks explains that their inspiration stemmed from a shared passion for the universal appeal of folk music and a desire to contribute a unique perspective to the genre. Despite their involvement in various musical projects, including Fizzy Orange, Sultan Leroy, and Ten Hail Mary’s, the band members unite under the Madra Salach banner to explore uncharted musical territories.
Originating as a three-piece outfit playing pub gigs in Dublin, Madra Salach expanded to include additional members, each bringing a unique musical perspective to the group. Their cohesive musical vision and shared love for experimental folk led them to form a distinct sound that blends traditional folk elements with avant-garde sensibilities.
Since their formation in 2023, Madra Salach has gained momentum, thanks to a live session with Dublin collective Lips2Ears that sparked widespread interest in their music. The band’s live performances have garnered a growing fan base, with notable appearances at festivals like All Together Now and Electric Picnic, setting the stage for future success and recognition.
With a democratic approach to songwriting and a collaborative spirit, Madra Salach draws on a diverse range of influences, from alt-country to Irish folk traditions. Each band member contributes their unique perspective and creative flair to every song, resulting in a harmonious blend of musical ingredients that culminate in a deliciously eclectic sound.
“Blue & Gold,” the band’s debut single, reflects Banks’ personal reflections on his early twenties, exploring themes of communication breakdown and delusions of stability. The track serves as a bold introduction to Madra Salach’s captivating sound, hinting at even greater musical heights to come for the band.
