The legendary album “Heartbeat City” by The Cars celebrates its 40th anniversary with a Deluxe Edition set to be released on October 31, 2025, through Rhino Records. Fans can now pre-order this special 4-CD/1-LP edition in the U.S. and the U.K. The collection includes the original quadruple-platinum album in both CD and LP formats, along with previously unreleased studio recordings, early mixes, and a full 1984 concert from the band’s “Heartbeat City” tour. The accompanying color booklet features photos, new track-by-track notes by keyboardist Greg Hawkes, and an essay by drummer David Robinson, the creative mind behind the band’s album covers.

The Deluxe Edition offers an inside look into the album’s creation with a demo of the hit single “Drive,” unreleased tracks like “Stranger Eyes” and “Jacki” (later renamed “Heartbeat City”), and various versions of the song “Shooting For You.” Additionally, the package includes a live concert from The Summit in Houston in 1984, never before released on CD, featuring iconic songs like “Candy-O” and “My Best Friend’s Girl.” The band’s performance of over 17 songs from their hit album captivated the audience with a mix of new tracks and classics.

Keyboardist Greg Hawkes shared his recollections of the band’s creative process during the making of “Drive,” highlighting Ric Ocasek’s evolution from a spooky bossa nova vibe to the iconic vocal stylings of Benjamin Orr. The group’s attention to detail and producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange’s direction to create a breathy sound helped shape the ethereal quality of the track.

David Robinson reminisced about discovering the album cover for “Heartbeat City” at a London gallery, finding inspiration in artist Peter Phillips’ painting, Art-O-Matic Loop di Loop. This vivid pop art piece perfectly complemented the sound of the album and encapsulated the essence of The Cars’ music.

Upon its release in 1984, “Heartbeat City” soared to critical acclaim, peaking at #3 on the charts and earning quadruple-platinum status in the U.S. With six hit singles over two years, including classics like “Magic” and “Why Can’t I Have You,” the album solidified The Cars’ position in the MTV era. The iconic music video for “You Might Think” even snagged the network’s first Video of the Year award.

As a special treat for fans, musician and best-selling author Bill Janovitz is set to release the biography “The Cars: Let the Stories Be Told” on September 30. This 512-page book captures the essence of the band’s journey through the collective memories of surviving members and those who were integral to their success. With an enthusiastic recounting of their experiences, this biography promises to be a must-read for any fan of The Cars.

In conclusion, the Deluxe Edition of “Heartbeat City” by The Cars is a testament to the band’s enduring legacy and creative prowess.
