Celebrating two decades of creating music, the Kyle Sowashes are gearing up for a pair of shows at Rumba Cafe. These concerts will not only mark the band’s 20-year milestone but also coincide with the release of their latest album on Anyway Records.

After parting ways with his previous group, Tomfoolery and the Mistakes, Sowash embarked on a solo project that eventually blossomed into the Kyle Sowashes. The genesis of the band can be traced back to a moment when Sowash decided to record an album for Columbus Discount Records, where he took on the challenge of playing all the instruments himself. Reflecting on the experience, he shared, “And so, I made an album for Columbus Discount Records where I played all of the instruments,” Continuing the tradition of naming things after himself, he titled the album “The Kyle Sowashes.”

The band’s lineup quickly evolved as Sowash brought in a revolving door of musician friends to accompany him on stage. However, this approach proved to be unsustainable, with Sowash realizing the limitations of constantly teaching new band members a setlist of songs. Recalling a disastrous house show in Dayton where the bassist was clearly unprepared, Sowash recognized the need for a more stable group of musicians who were intimately familiar with the material. As a result, the current iteration of the Kyle Sowashes is made up of individuals who have a deep understanding of the band’s catalog, facilitating growth and cohesion within the group.

Looking back on the band’s journey, Sowash expressed a sense of accomplishment and gratitude for the experiences they have shared over the past two decades. Despite the challenges of maintaining a band for such a long period, the Kyle Sowashes remain dedicated to their craft and committed to creating music that resonates with their audience. As they prepare to take the stage at Rumba Cafe, the band is excited to celebrate their achievements and share their new album with fans, marking a significant chapter in their musical legacy.
