Max Cavalera reflects on the tumultuous journey he has experienced in the music industry, particularly during his time with the bands Sepultura and Soulfly. Back in mid-September 1994, as he prepared to perform at the prestigious Monsters of Rock Festival, tragedy struck when his stepson Dana Wells passed away in a car accident. Devastated by the loss, Max, alongside his wife and manager Gloria, and his brother Igor, struggled to come to terms with the heartbreaking event.

Only four months later, after a Sepultura performance in South London, Max faced another blow when the band decided to dismiss Gloria as their manager. Feeling a sense of betrayal from his brother and bandmates, Max made the tough decision to quit the band, sparking a decade-long estrangement between him and Igor. The dissolution of their bond, forged from years of shared dreams and musical aspirations, left Max reeling, unsure of what the future held.

In defiance of the turmoil, Max forged ahead and formed his own band, Soulfly, in 1997. This marked a new chapter in his career, allowing him to explore new musical territories and define his sound outside the shadow of Sepultura. Soulfly’s self-titled debut album in 1998 paved the way for a successful career, with the band releasing a total of 12 albums and currently working on their next record following the release of “Totem” in 2022.

Despite his success with Soulfly, Max couldn’t shake the absence of his brother Igor, with whom he had shared a deep bond since childhood. The Cavalera brothers’ synergy was akin to legendary musical duos like Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul of Pantera or the Van Halen siblings. Their shared passion for music and dreams of conquering the metal world had been the foundation of their relationship. However, the fracture caused by Sepultura’s breakup left Max longing for the connection he had lost.

As he navigated the highs and lows of the music industry with Soulfly, Max continued to grapple with the void left by Igor’s absence. The journey from Sepultura’s rise to global fame to the formation and growth of Soulfly was a testament to Max’s resilience and determination to carve out his own path in the face of adversity. Despite the challenges he faced, Max’s love for music and his commitment to his art remained unwavering, driving him forward as he looked towards the future with hope and determination.

In recounting his tumultuous journey, Max Cavalera’s story serves as a reminder of the complexities and sacrifices inherent in the pursuit of artistic expression. Through the highs and lows, the betrayals and setbacks, Max’s unwavering passion for music has been a guiding force, propelling him to new heights and inspiring others to never give up on their dreams, no matter the obstacles they may face.
