Maddy Prior of Steeleye Span shared insights on their latest album, “Conflict,” as the band prepares for their upcoming UK tour in November and December. The album focuses on traditional material, viewed through a modern lens that highlights the timeless themes in the music.

Having been in the music industry for over 50 years, the motivation to create new music comes naturally to Maddy and the band. Music is at the center of their lives, and recording new material is a seamless process that reflects their passion for storytelling through song. Steeleye Span’s discography, which includes about 24 albums, showcases their versatility and willingness to push boundaries in their music.

When it comes to deciding the setlist for the tour, Maddy mentions that they have an extensive back catalogue to choose from. While songs like “All Around My Hat” are fan favorites that always make it to the setlist, the band also revisits older tracks that haven’t been performed in a while. They experiment with different arrangements, including acapella renditions that showcase the band’s harmonies and musical prowess.

Steeleye Span is known for their unique blend of traditional folk music with a rockier edge. Their loud, full sound is a result of incorporating lead and rhythm guitars into their arrangements. While they stay true to their roots in traditional music, they are not afraid to explore different styles and interpretations in their songs.

Reflecting on the influence of traditional music, Maddy reminisces about learning her first traditional song, “Lark in the Morning,” at school. The storytelling and themes of traditional songs resonate with her even today, despite the often dark or violent undertones present in the lyrics. These songs have a timeless quality that continues to captivate audiences.

Maddy’s passion for teaching led her to start singing and music schools, offering courses for enthusiasts looking to deepen their knowledge of folk music. She notes the growing interest in folk music among young people, many of whom have been raised by a generation of folk enthusiasts. Folk clubs and festivals play a crucial role in keeping the tradition alive, providing spaces for musicians to perform and audiences to engage with the music.

Steeleye Span’s upcoming tour will see them performing at various venues across the UK, with manager John Dagnall handling the logistics of booking shows. The band plays in different sized venues, ranging from intimate settings to larger halls, ensuring that their music reaches a diverse audience. Their London gig at the Cadogan has become a staple in their tour schedule, often serving as the grand finale before the band members head off in different directions.

As Steeleye Span gears up for their tour, Maddy and the band are excited to share their music with fans old and new, continuing their legacy of blending tradition with innovation in the folk music scene.
