Indie rock band The Backseat Lovers recently graced the stage at Terminal West, treating fans to a memorable and intimate performance. The group, led by Joshua Harmon, captivated the audience with their catchy pop-rock tunes in a sold-out show that left attendees buzzing with excitement.

Known for their hit song “Kilby Girl,” which has resonated with many college students, The Backseat Lovers originated in Provo, Utah, where Harmon and the guitarist crossed paths at an open mic night. Since their debut album, “When We Were Friends,” released in early 2019, the band has been on a whirlwind tour until the unveiling of their sophomore record, “Waiting to Spill,” in late 2022.

The concert kicked off promptly at 11:45 p.m., organized by the Shaky Knees Music Festival. Stepping onto the stage to a rapturous reception, all four band members launched into a high-energy instrumental jam reminiscent of their early work. Transitioning smoothly into “Pool House,” a track that touches on the unease of social gatherings, the group set the tone for a night of musical immersion.

With “Growing/Dying,” a brooding and guitar-driven piece, the crowd enthusiastically sang along, carried away by the emotion in the room. Following a brief tuning break, the band delivered a powerful rendition of “Snowbank Blues,” showcasing Harmon’s vocal prowess as he poured soul into each lyric, eliciting a moment of collective reflection from the audience.

In a candid moment, Harmon expressed gratitude to the late-night audience for turning out and admitted the challenges of performing at such a late hour. Encouraging fans to contribute to the energy of the show, he introduced two unreleased songs from the upcoming album, both of which struck a chord with listeners with their raw emotion and poignant storytelling.

The highlight of the night came as the band launched into “Kilby Girl,” sparking an electric atmosphere as the crowd united in song. Lead guitarist Jonas Swanson mesmerized with his masterful riffs, enhancing the connection between the band and their fans. Keeping the momentum going, The Backseat Lovers segued into “Maple Syrup” and “Olivia,” delivering equally exhilarating performances that had the audience cheering for more.

Joking about the strain on his voice, Harmon engaged in playful banter with fans while expressing appreciation for their unwavering support. Skipping the traditional encore pretense, the band closed out the night with “Sinking Ship,” a vibrant and soul-stirring anthem that left a lasting impression on all in attendance.

With infectious energy and heartfelt performances, The Backseat Lovers proved that they are a rising force in the indie music scene. Terminal West was alive with their melodic charm and musical prowess, offering a glimpse of the band’s undeniable talent and promising future in the industry.
