Simon Phillips, a versatile and respected musician in the industry, is renowned for his ambidextrous skills behind the drum kit. However, his talents extend beyond drumming, as he seamlessly transitions into the role of a producer, drawing from his extensive technical experience that spans decades.

Phillips’ musical journey started in the early 1970s when he embarked on studio session work at the BBC and beyond, honing his craft both as a musician and an engineer. An opportunity to join Toto in 1992 led him to become a US citizen and establish Phantom Recordings, his own studio in Los Angeles, showcasing his commitment to musical excellence.

As a key member of the progressive rock supergroup DarWin, Phillips wears multiple hats on their new album “Distorted Mirror” – serving as the drummer, keyboard player, engineer, and co-producer. The album continues the band’s legacy of superior musicianship, featuring core members such as guitarists DarWin and Greg Howe, bassist Mohini Dey, and keyboard player Derek Sherinian.

The distinctive sound of DarWin’s new album is a testament to Phillips’ technical prowess and musical creativity. With unexpected time signatures like 7/4, 12/4, and 15/4, the album’s rich vocal harmonies, coupled with Phillips’ crisp drumming and dynamic cymbal work, create a captivating listening experience. Singer Matt Bissonette’s vocals soar over the intricate instrumental backdrop, adding depth and emotion to the compositions.

Despite being primarily recognized as a drummer, Phillips emphasizes his passion for producing records, a craft that he holds dear to his heart. Drawing inspiration from his collaboration with Mike Oldfield in the ’80s, Phillips delved into engineering, learning the intricacies of recording and mixing. Oldfield’s mentorship played a pivotal role in shaping Phillips’ approach to capturing the essence of musical performances on record, instilling in him a deep appreciation for the art of producing high-quality music.

Phillips’ dedication to both drumming and engineering is a testament to his versatility and commitment to musical excellence. Balancing the demands of multiple roles in the studio, Phillips exemplifies a rare combination of technical precision and artistic vision, striving to deliver music that not only sounds great but also resonates with listeners on a profound level.

In an industry where trends come and go, Phillips’ steadfast belief in the timeless appeal of well-crafted records serves as a guiding light for aspiring musicians and producers. By staying true to the fundamental principles of producing quality music, Phillips and his peers in DarWin are paving the way for a resurgence of dynamic, soulful records that captivate audiences and stand the test of time.
