San Francisco duo chokecherry, comprising Izzie Clark and E. Scarlett Levinson, have revealed their upcoming debut album Ripe Fruit Rots and Falls, scheduled for release on 14 November. The album aims to encapsulate the pulse of today’s youth, delving into themes of anger, desire, and understanding. The duo has marked this announcement with the release of their latest single Major Threat, along with a DIY VHS video that exudes raw energy.

Known for their shoegaze-inspired style, chokecherry takes a departure with Major Threat, presenting a gritty, punk-infused track reminiscent of hardcore legends Minor Threat. The song is characterized by its unpolished, edgy nature, thriving in the midst of disorder and intensity.

Reflecting on the roots of the track, Clark reminisces about her exposure to heavy surf punk in Southern California, drawing inspiration from vocalists like Brendan Yates of Turnstile and Zack de la Rocha of Rage Against the Machine. The track, she reveals, was born from a fleeting sense of abandonment.

The accompanying music video, a collaborative effort by Clark and filmmaker Whitney Otte, mirrors this frenzy, featuring grainy VHS aesthetics, whimsical elements, and playful commentary on modern dating customs. Levinson describes Major Threat as a glimpse into chokecherry’s live performance style – dynamic, erratic, and raw, capturing the essence of their energy on stage.

Despite the chaotic nature of the track, chokecherry’s signature harmonies remain a central element. Levinson highlights how the song’s bridge is layered with classic chokecherry harmonies, emphasizing the theme of yearning for something that rejects you.

As they delve into the concept of emotional and societal upheaval, chokecherry’s debut album, Ripe Fruit Rots and Falls, reflects the essence of San Francisco’s underground culture. Produced by Chris Coady, the album captures the essence of the city’s tumultuous political landscape and the generational anguish of the year 2025.

Delving into a fusion of genres including post-rock, alt-rock, shoegaze, punk, and noise-pop, the album presents a sonic landscape that is both expansive and intimately personal. Addressing themes of empathy and rage, Ripe Fruit Rots and Falls serves as a testament to humanity’s expression through music.

Having built their reputation through grassroots efforts, Clark and Levinson draw from a diverse musical upbringing that includes influences ranging from ‘90s alt-rock to hardcore and metal. Their dedication to a DIY ethos is evident in their creative choices, from directing music videos to designing tour posters by hand.

With their North American headline tour on the horizon, chokecherry is poised to bring their energy to audiences across the continent. The tour will kick off with a West Coast album release weekend featuring special guests The Sewing Club, promising an electrifying showcase of their artistry.
