Legendary Southern rock group drops new album after 21-year hiatus: ‘Revived vigor and resolve’

Iconic Southern rock band 38 Special has given fans a reason to celebrate this fall with the release of their first album in 21 years. Entitled “Milestone,” the album marks a significant moment in the band’s five-decade-long career. Released in September on the band’s label, 38 Special Records, “Milestone” quickly made its way onto the Billboard charts in early October.

The album, which features nine tracks, showcases the band’s continued evolution and dedication to their craft. Singer and guitarist Don Barnes, a founding member of 38 Special, is still a driving force behind the group and has co-writing credits on eight of the songs on “Milestone.” With a renewed spirit and determination, Barnes expressed his gratitude for the support and love shown by fans towards the new music. He emphasized the significant milestone of the band’s 50th anniversary and the hard work put into creating fresh, contemporary music for listeners.

With tracks like “All I Haven’t Said,” “So Much So Right,” “Windows of Memories,” and “Slightly Controversial” featuring Pat Monahan of Train, “Milestone” presents a band that is not afraid to break new ground while remaining true to their rock and roll roots. The band’s website describes the album as a testament to the group’s longstanding presence in the music industry, showcasing their enduring passion and energy.

The band’s touring schedule reflects their commitment to bringing their music to fans around the country. With about 20 shows scheduled from now until April 2026, including performances in cities such as Birmingham, Cullman, Montgomery, Mobile, and Tuscaloosa, 38 Special continues to captivate audiences with their electrifying live performances. Recent performances in Huntsville and Birmingham have further solidified the band’s reputation as a favorite in Alabama.

Since their formation in 1974 in Jacksonville, Florida, 38 Special has become synonymous with hits like “Hold On Loosely,” “Caught Up in You,” and “Second Chance.” With over a dozen albums released since 1977, the band has cultivated a devoted fan base that continues to support them throughout the years. Fronted by Barnes and featuring a talented lineup including keyboard player Bobby Capps, drummer Gary Moffatt, bassist Barry Dunaway, and guitarist Jerry Riggs, the band remains dedicated to evolving their sound while staying true to their Southern rock roots.

In a recent interview, Barnes expressed the band’s commitment to delivering a modern version of 38 Special in 2025, catering to their enthusiastic fan base and staying relevant in today’s music landscape.
