Canadian rock icons Loverboy are demonstrating that even after four decades, they are still dedicated to working hard for their fans’ entertainment. The esteemed members of the Canadian Music Hall of Fame have wrapped up yet another year of electrifying performances throughout North America. This week, they are set to unite with Styx for a thrilling Rockin’ in Paradise with Styx & Friends concert at The Seascape Resort in Miramar Beach, Florida, on Friday 10 October.

Few bands from Canada’s rock explosion of the 1980s have persisted as admirably as Loverboy. Originating in Calgary in 1979, the band emerged from the local rock scene when Mike Reno, transitioning from his previous band Moxy, joined forces with seasoned guitarist Paul Dean from Streetheart. Together with Doug Johnson on keyboards, Matt Frenette on drums, and bassist Scott Smith, they formed a formidable lineup that dominated the early 80s FM airwaves.

Their debut single “Turn Me Loose” in 1980 introduced the world to Loverboy’s distinctive sound – energetic arena rock characterized by catchy hooks, harmonies, and powerful choruses. Their eponymous first album achieved double platinum status in both Canada and the United States, foreshadowing a string of chart-topping hits that established them as one of the decade’s most successful musical exports.

By 1981, Loverboy’s second album “Get Lucky” had elevated them to global stardom. The album sold over four million copies and spawned “Working for the Weekend,” the band’s enduring anthem for the overworked dreamer. The song’s iconic red-leather-pants music video featuring Reno in his trademark headband became a regular fixture on MTV, cementing their position in the annals of pop culture.

The band’s success continued with “Keep It Up” in 1983 and “Lovin’ Every Minute of It” in 1985, both achieving multi-platinum status. Their hit parade included songs like “Hot Girls in Love,” “When It’s Over,” “Heaven in Your Eyes,” and “Queen of the Broken Hearts” – tracks that epitomized the sound of North American rock radio before the rise of grunge.

While many of their contemporaries faded into obscurity, Loverboy remained relevant. Their music continued to feature prominently in films, television shows, and commercials. In recent times, their tracks have been heard in national ad campaigns for Radio Shack and National Car Rental, with actor Patrick Warburton making a cameo alongside the band.

In 2023, Loverboy teamed up with IHOP for a playful rendition of their hit song “Working for the Weekend,” reimagining it as “Working for the Weekday.” The collaboration included a whimsical video featuring IHOP’s “Syrup Caddies” in a full 80s parody, underscoring Loverboy’s enduring sense of humor.

With over 15 million albums sold and induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, Loverboy’s popularity spans generations. Despite the tragic loss of founding bassist Scott Smith in 2000, the band persevered, welcoming long-time friend Kenneth “Spider” Sinnaeve to complete their lineup.

Loverboy’s upcoming tour dates for 2024-2025 promise to bring their timeless rock hits to audiences across North America. From iconic venues like The El Mocambo in Toronto to the Mountain America Center in Idaho Falls, the band continues to spread their musical magic. Tickets and detailed tour information can be found on their official website.
