Billy Branch set to debut new album titled ‘The Blues Is My Biography’
d album, The Blues Is My Biography, is set to be released on November 7th. This album, which is largely autobiographical, will mark the debut release for Rosa’s Lounge Records, a label based in Chicago.
One of the singles from the upcoming album, “Hole in My Soul,” was introduced today. This song serves as Billy’s reflection on the profound impact and significance of immersing oneself in the Blues, with Bobby Rush lending his vocals and harmonica skills to the track. Billy explains, “Hole In Your Soul” is a phrase that has resonated with me over the years. A Blues deejay in Chicago used to say it frequently, and I felt compelled to incorporate it into a song because of its significance to me.”
The album, The Blues Is My Biography, was produced by Larry Batiste and recorded at Infinite Studios in Alameda, California, and JoyRide Studio in Chicago. Alongside Bobby Rush, the album features guest vocals from Shemekia Copeland on the track “Begging For Change.” The instrumental accompaniment is provided by Billy’s band, The Sons of Blues, with Larry Baptiste handling the horn arrangements.
The musical landscape of the album ranges from the soulful melodies of “Toxic Strain” to the gritty R&B vibes of “All Your Bluff” and the energetic rhythm of “Roaches.” The title track reflects both resolve and contemplation, while “The Harmonica Man” captures a distinct essence. Billy emphasizes the autobiographical nature of the album, particularly highlighting the significance of “The Harmonica Man.”
Reflecting on the album, Billy shares, “Every song holds a special place for me as they are all reflective of my personal journey. This album is not only the most important work I have done but also the best.”
Billy Branch’s musical journey began at the age of 10 when he purchased his first harmonica. Immersing himself in the Chicago blues scene, he was mentored by legends like James Cotton, Junior Wells, and Willie Dixon. By 1975, he had joined the Willie Dixon Chicago Blues All-Stars and eventually signed with Alligator Records, solidifying his place in the blues genre.
In 1977, Billy founded The Sons of Blues, laying the foundation for a successful musical career. The band, comprised of talented musicians including drummer Dionte “Musik “Skinner and keyboardist Sumito Ariyoshi, has released 15 albums. Billy’s harmonica skills have also been featured on over 300 albums by notable artists such as Vince Gill, Taj Mahal, and Johnny Winter.
As a blues ambassador, Billy has taken his music worldwide, performing in various countries and at prestigious festivals. Over his 50-year career, he has received several awards and accolades, including three Grammy nominations, Blues Music Awards, and acknowledgments from the Blues Hall of Fame. His commitment to preserving and promoting blues music has been recognized through proclamations from the City of Chicago and his contributions to the Grammy Museum.
