This week in New Orleans is marked by a variety of musical events, including a free blues festival, an arena concert by an underground rap duo, and two shows by a legendary jazz-fusion band. The Crescent City Blues & BBQ Festival, taking place from Friday to Sunday at Lafayette Square, offers a lineup of local and touring blues acts. This free event, put together by the non-profit New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation with funds from Jazz Fest, kicks off on a mellow note on Friday with performances by Sierra Green & the Giants and Tab Benoit.

Saturday’s program expands to two stages, with acts like Mem Shannon & the Membership, Leo Nocentelli of The Meters, and more. Devon Allman’s Blues Summit takes the stage in the evening with a stellar lineup. Sunday features a range of artists, including Vasti Jackson filling in for Little Freddie King due to an injury. Bobby Rush will close out the festival on Sunday night, showcasing his musical talent and showmanship at a ripe age of 91.

On Saturday, the Smoothie King Center will host a concert by the $uicideboy$ duo, known for their unique rap style that delves into dark and gritty themes like death, depression, and addiction. The duo’s music is not your typical commercialized hip-hop, embracing a more raw and apocalyptic sound influenced by trap-metal elements. Their deep and thought-provoking lyrics have resonated with a wide audience, contributing to billions of streams of their songs.

$uicideboy$’s journey includes overcoming personal struggles, such as Scott Arcenaux Jr.’s battle with opioid addiction and Aristos Petrou’s mental health challenges. Despite these obstacles, they have created a niche for themselves in the music industry with a distinct style that reflects their New Orleans roots. The duo has launched successful tours like the “Grey Day Tour,” culminating in a hometown performance at the Smoothie King Center this Saturday.

The concert will feature other talented artists signed to $uicideboy$’s label, G*59 Record$, promising an electrifying night for fans of underground rap. With tickets starting at $66, this event will be a highlight for those who appreciate alternative rap music in the vibrant musical landscape of New Orleans. Don’t miss out on these exciting music events happening this week in the Crescent City.
