The Gnomes bring Frankston’s Bayside Beat to life with debut album and new video ‘Flippin’ Stomp’
Melbourne’s up-and-coming garage-beat band, The Gnomes, is set to share their high-energy sound with a wider audience. They recently released their very first music video, Flippin’ Stomp, in conjunction with the announcement of their debut album, “The Gnomes,” to be released on 7 November through the revered Dog Meat Records label.
The music video, created by Creepy Baby Productions, captures the raw excitement and youthful exuberance that has propelled The Gnomes into the spotlight as one of Australia’s most thrilling new live acts. Shot in Melbourne’s picturesque Royal Botanic Gardens and the newly reopened Campbell Arcade, the video pays homage to the iconic visual styles of legendary bands like The Beatles and The Monkees, blending physical comedy with the carefree spirit of rock ‘n’ roll. The track itself is a lively, rhythm-driven anthem inspired by the annual Flippin’ The Bird Festival held at Frankston’s Singing Bird Studios, a place that holds special significance for the band.
Lead singer Jay Millar expressed that the song is a tribute to the vibrant local music scene that nurtured them, stating, “Flippin’ The Bird has been a huge part of our lives as a band. It’s about that Frankston energy-loud, loose, and full of heart.” The band’s packed schedule has included sold-out performances at esteemed venues like The Curtin, as well as supporting gigs for renowned acts such as Jon Spencer in Melbourne and Castlemaine. The launch party for “The Gnomes” is set to take place at the Brunswick Ballroom on 14 November, featuring performances by Loose Lips, The Pearlies, and Riviera.
The Gnomes’ meteoric rise has been anything but accidental. What started as a personal endeavor by Jay Millar, a young singer-songwriter, recording music under the name Gnome in his bedroom, quickly gained traction after his early recordings caught the attention of a popular Spanish garage-punk YouTube channel. This led to the formation of a full band with guitarist Ned Capp, bassist Olly Katsianis, and drummer Ethan Robins.
Within a short span of time, The Gnomes have shared stages with some of Australia’s most dynamic music acts such as Skegss, Drunk Mums, Split System, Hockey Dad, and Cosmic Psychos. Their fusion of vintage rock ‘n’ roll influences with a contemporary Melbourne flair draws comparisons to iconic bands like The Easybeats, The Kinks, and early Beatles. Their debut album, “The Gnomes,” features twelve original tracks produced by Millar at Singing Bird Studios, showcasing a fresh take on garage rock that has garnered praise from critics for its lively energy and authenticity.
Scheduled for international release in various formats, including LP, CD, cassette, and digital, through Dog Meat Records, “The Gnomes” is set to make a splash on a global scale. With plans already in motion for an international tour in 2026, The Gnomes’ journey from their local roots in Frankston to worldwide recognition is quickly unfolding.
