Kerry King discusses relationship with Tom Araya
In a recent interview with Luiz Cesar Pimentel, Kerry King of Slayer shared insights into his relationship with vocalist and bassist Tom Araya following the loss of the band’s founding guitarist, Jeff Hanneman. King acknowledged the impact of Hanneman’s passing on Araya, stating that it seemed to weigh heavier on him than on himself, leading Araya to consider retirement earlier due to perceived changes within the band.
Reflecting on the evolving dynamics of their friendship, King noted a subtle distance that has developed over time. Drawing parallels to the early days of Slayer, he mentioned that he and Araya no longer communicate as frequently, explaining, “We don’t talk on the phone. We rarely text each other. And that’s just because when you’re together for 40 years — he became a very different person.” Despite these changes, King expressed his admiration for Araya, emphasizing that they are still on good terms.
Looking ahead, Slayer is set to return for two shows this summer, one in London’s Finsbury Park and the other in Cardiff’s Black Weir Fields. King disclosed that the initial inspiration for these performances came from Araya, particularly driven by the desire to make amends for missing the Louder Than Life festival show the previous year due to unforeseen circumstances. Additionally, King expressed excitement about performing at the upcoming Black Sabbath show in Birmingham, United Kingdom.
When asked about Araya’s decision to retire, King speculated that the rigors of touring and a preference for being at home likely influenced Araya’s choice. Reflecting on their individual personalities, King highlighted the differences between himself and Araya, humorously illustrating their contrasting preferences with anecdotes like choosing different flavors of milkshakes or perceiving the color of the sky differently. These disparities, while lighthearted, underscore the distinct paths they have taken over the years.
The band faced a significant setback in January 2011 when Hanneman contracted necrotising fasciitis from a spider bite, forcing him into semi-retirement. Tragically, Hanneman passed away in May 2013 due to alcohol-related cirrhosis of the liver. These events undoubtedly had a profound impact on the band and its members, contributing to the evolution of their relationships and eventual decisions, including Araya’s retirement.
As Slayer prepares for their upcoming shows and reflects on their shared history, King’s candid revelations provide a glimpse into the complexities of long-standing friendships and collaborations within the music industry. Despite the challenges and changes they have navigated, the mutual respect and camaraderie between King and Araya endure, forming a lasting bond that transcends the trials of time and life on the road.
