Kalamazoo Club celebrates 30 years of welcoming music icons
A popular music venue in Crouch End celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, known as The Kalamazoo Klub. Established in 1995 by two music enthusiasts in North London, the club was named after Kalamazoo, the city in the US where Gibson Guitars are manufactured. Since its inception, The Kalamazoo Klub has been a hub for acoustic music, featuring renowned artists such as Martin Carthy, Bert Jansch, Michelle Shocked, and Bonnie Dobson. The inaugural night at The King’s Head showcased the talents of folk-blues icon Bert Jansch.
With its roots firmly planted in the folk genre, The Kalamazoo Klub has evolved over the years to encompass a broader musical outlook, inviting musicians from various genres, including bluegrass and New Orleans jazz. The club’s co-founder Guy Simpson, together with Paul Alcantara, operates the club’s monthly events at the Great Northern Railway Tavern following the impact of the Covid pandemic. Reflecting on the club’s origins, Simpson expressed their desire to create a unique space for music enthusiasts, steering away from the confines of traditional folk clubs to shape an extraordinary music experience.
