James Yorkston, the celebrated Scottish singer-songwriter, has recently shared the news of his upcoming album release, “Songs for Nina and Johanna,” set to launch on August 22 under the Domino label. This record marks his sixteenth release on Domino and the third project that was recorded in partnership with members of The Second Hand Orchestra in Stockholm. Noteworthy collaborations on this album include Nina Persson from The Cardigans, who worked with James on his previous successful album “The Great White Sea Eagle,” along with Johanna Söderberg from First Aid Kit. The album features five tracks with Nina and four with Johanna, each adding their unique vocal styles to the mix.

The album serves as a reflection on themes of family, love, and the journey of parenthood, with a blend of soft melodies and thought-provoking lyrics. Recorded live at Studio Rymden in Stockholm alongside co-producer Daniel Bengtson, “Songs for Nina and Johanna” showcases the harmonious fusion of two of Sweden’s iconic female vocalists. Yorkston expresses his excitement about collaborating with such talented artists, stating, “Who wouldn’t embrace the chance to sing with two great Swedish voices? When the idea for Johanna to join the fold was suggested, I leapt at the chance. Nina and Johanna, they complement, yet never compete.” Additionally, Yorkston acknowledges his effort to give each vocalist space to interpret the songs as they see fit.

During the recording process, Söderberg was pregnant with her second child, which adds a unique layer of emotion to her performances. Despite the reduced presence of Second Hand Orchestra’s leader Karl Jonas Winqvist due to illness, key members of the collective contributed significantly to the album. Notable names include Peter Morén from Peter Bjorn and John on guitar, Ullis Gyllenberg on violin, Lina Langendorf on saxophone, and Lars Skoglund on drums, all adding their expertise to the project.

The album launch will be accompanied by a series of live shows featuring James Yorkston alongside Nina Persson. Starting in September, they will perform in various venues including Queen’s Hall in Edinburgh, St Martin in the Field in London, and Södra Teatern in Stockholm. Following these duo shows, James Yorkston will continue with solo performances in Glasgow, Stirling, Leeds, and other cities. The tour extends into 2026 with dates set in Berlin, Leipzig, and Frankfurt, offering fans an opportunity to experience the magic of his music in person.

The release of “Songs for Nina and Johanna” will be available in limited edition LP, CD, and digital download formats, inviting listeners to immerse themselves in the heartfelt compositions crafted by James Yorkston and his esteemed collaborators. This album stands as a touching exploration of life’s joys and challenges, making it an essential addition to Yorkston’s impressive discography.
