Lookout Records veterans Squirtgun have recently made a striking return to music after a 22-year hiatus by releasing their new song, “Sunflowers.” The song narrates the poignant tale of Mario Calvi, an anti-fascist Resistance fighter tragically murdered by Nazi soldiers just one day after the conclusion of World War II, while he was within reach of his grieving mother. Bassist and producer Mass Giorgini, shedding light on the personal connection to the story, expressed, “Mario wasn’t merely a historical figure but kin. Referred to as ‘uncle’ by my mother, his narrative was an integral part of my upbringing, recounted within the walls of the same farmhouse he once called home by his mother and my great-aunt.”

In an exciting development, “Sunflowers” also signifies the first appearance of Squirtgun’s new “Supersoaker” lineup, slated to showcase their talents at the upcoming Punk Rock Raduno in Bergamo, Italy this July. The refreshed lineup consists of Kevin Sierzega taking the lead vocals (known for his contributions in Teen Idols and Bullets to Broadway), with Dan Panic on drums and backing vocals (previously associated with Screeching Weasel, Riverdales, Queers, and Groovie Ghoulies), Zac Damon handling guitar and vocals (from bands such as Screeching Weasel, Big in Japan, and Zoinks!), Flav Giorgini on guitar as a founding member, and Mass Giorgini laying down the bass (recognized for his work in Common Rider and Screeching Weasel). Fans can listen to the new single “Sunflowers” and witness the revitalized Squirtgun lineup’s performance at the Punk Rock Raduno festival.

The return of Squirtgun after more than two decades with “Sunflowers” has not only reignited their melodic prowess but also brought attention to the compelling narrative woven into their music. Mario Calvi’s legacy, preserved through this song, sheds light on the sacrifices made by brave individuals during tumultuous times in history. The emotional depth and historical significance infused into the lyrics add an enriching layer of storytelling to Squirtgun’s musical repertoire, connecting listeners to a poignant chapter of the past.

The release of “Sunflowers” serves as a testament to Squirtgun’s enduring musical legacy and their ability to seamlessly blend personal history with captivating melodies. As they prepare to grace the stage at Punk Rock Raduno, fans can anticipate a powerful performance showcasing not only the band’s musical prowess but also their commitment to honoring significant historical narratives through their music. By staying true to their roots while embracing new creative directions, Squirtgun’s resurgence in the music scene is a testament to the timeless appeal of their sound and message.
