“NEW BRUTALISM drops debut single “089” from soon-to-be-released EP produced by Steve Albini”
New Brutalism has recently released their latest single, “089,” which serves as a preview of their upcoming EP, Requiescat Record. The EP was recorded by Steve Albini and is set to be released on September 12, 2025. This Knoxville-based minimal rock band, consisting of Shane Elliott on vocals, Matt Hall on guitar/vocals, David Basford on bass/vocals, and Carey Balch on drums, has stuck to their original aesthetic since forming in 1998.
Their upcoming EP continues their tradition of using numerical names for their tracks, with “088,” “087,” and “089” being featured on this record. All songs were recorded in 2021 at Electrical Audio by Steve Albini and mastered by Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering Service in 2025. The EP will be available on a heavyweight 12-inch vinyl, with the same tracklist on both sides.
The band’s name, derived from an architectural movement, hints at their straightforward and minimalistic approach to music. The initial duo of Hall and Balch, who met in 1996, emphasized the principles of minimalism and simplicity in their music. Elliott joined soon after, followed by Basford and former bassist Sonny Simpson. After some lineup changes, Elliott eventually returned as the vocalist in 2021.
New Brutalism’s unique sound is enhanced by using aluminum instruments that the band designs and constructs themselves. They describe aluminum as lightweight, consistent, and easy to work with, embodying their pursuit of precision and accuracy in their music.
The title of their latest EP, Requiescat Record, carries a deeper meaning following the passing of Steve Albini. Described as “shattered and kinetic,” the EP embodies a sense of time, tragedy, and sonic quality. While the title may reference the dead, the music feels vibrantly alive and evocative.
The single “089” showcases the band’s evolution in sound-making over almost two and a half decades. The track unfolds without repetition in a linear progression, featuring powerful riffs, bass and drum preludes, verses, leads, and guitar passages. The song culminates in distortion and noise before a sudden stop, captivating listeners with its unique structure.
New Brutalism’s lyrics are thought-provoking, delving into ancient boat-making techniques and adding depth to their music. With their upcoming EP and the release of “089,” New Brutalism continues to push the boundaries of alternative rock, noise rock, and post-hardcore with their raw, uncompromising sound.
