Longtime Down guitarists Pepper Keenan and Kirk Windstein have recently begun recording guitars for their newest studio album at OCD Recording in Metairie, Louisiana. This upcoming album will be their first full-length release in more than a decade, slated for release in 2026 under Nuclear Blast Records. Fans have been treated to a glimpse of the recording process through a short in-studio video featuring Keenan and Windstein, along with some behind-the-scenes photos.

The new album marks Down’s return to full-length output after a long hiatus of over 12 years. The lineup includes vocalist Philip H. Anselmo, guitarist Pepper Keenan, drummer Jimmy Bower, bassist Pat Bruders, and the returning Kirk Windstein, all uniting under the NOLA metal banner. Down’s announcement of their signing with Nuclear Blast last April was welcomed with excitement from the label, expressing their enthusiasm for working with the band and bringing their music back into the spotlight.

Frontman Philip Anselmo shared his delight in signing with Nuclear Blast Records, emphasizing the band’s readiness to create exceptional recordings. Keenan, who also plays with Corrosion of Conformity, expressed his honor in joining the Nuclear Blast family once again. Drummer Jimmy Bower echoed the sentiments, appreciating the opportunity to work with a label known for releasing excellent records.

This new studio venture follows a slew of recent live performances, including a Western U.S. tour with Danzig and a headline slot at the Milwaukee Metal Fest. The upcoming album represents a significant creative milestone for Down, marking their first full-length release since 2012’s Down IV – Part I. Kirk Windstein discussed the musical direction of the new material, describing it as a return to the band’s roots, bringing back the old-school Down sound that fans know and love.

Furthermore, he highlighted the organic and stripped-down writing process for the new material, emphasizing the band’s focus on simplicity and authenticity. The members of Down have taken a step back and revisited their creative process, aiming to recapture the essence of their original sound. With a renewed sense of purpose and a return to their roots, Down’s upcoming album promises to deliver the signature sound that fans have been eagerly awaiting.
