Cornish is part of a lineage of jazz pianists associated with Blue Note, following in the footsteps of legends like Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, Geri Allen, Jason Moran, and Robert Glasper. Raised in Houston, Texas, and a graduate of Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, Cornish joins a prestigious group that includes Moran, Glasper, Walter Smith III, Kendrick Scott, Chris Dave, and James Francies. Within this community, there is a subset of musicians shaping the modern jazz landscape: Moran, Glasper, Francies, and now, Cornish.
The legacy of Blue Note Records is evident in Cornish’s work, particularly his collaboration with Joshua Redman on Redman’s latest album Words Fall Short. The label’s influence, illustrated by groundbreaking recordings from the mid-20th century, continues to impact contemporary jazz. Cornish reflects on the inspiration he draws from past Blue Note artists like Robert Glasper and Jason Moran, acknowledging their contributions to shaping his musical identity. He believes that each artist builds upon the foundation laid by those before them, evolving and expanding the genre.
Cornish possesses a unique ability to blend traditional jazz elements with a contemporary flair, evident in the nine original compositions on his debut album You’re Exaggerating! Drawing from personal experiences, reflections, and influences, Cornish’s approach showcases his technical prowess and emotional depth. Backed by Joshua Crumbly’s skillful bass and Jonathan Pinson’s dynamic drumming, Cornish leads a cohesive trio that uplifts and unites through their music.
Scheduled for release on August 22, You’re Exaggerating! pays homage to Geri Allen and serves as a testament to Cornish’s dedication to honoring jazz traditions while pushing boundaries. The album captures the spirit of innovation and creativity that defined Allen’s career, reflecting Cornish’s belief in highlighting the often overlooked talent of women in jazz. Through his music, Cornish not only celebrates Allen’s legacy but also challenges preconceived notions about gender roles in the genre.
As Cornish embarks on his 2025 tour, spanning across the US and Europe, audiences can witness his artistry firsthand. With performances scheduled at renowned venues like Dizzy’s in New York and Ronnie Scott’s in London, Cornish continues to share his passion for jazz with a global audience. His debut album marks the beginning of a promising career, firmly establishing him as a torchbearer for the next generation of Blue Note artists.
