Is Mac DeMarco the Last Indie Rock Star?

Mac DeMarco, the musician known for his laid-back and carefree style, has built a reputation as an indie-rock icon over the years. Despite his overwhelming popularity, there is more to DeMarco than meets the eye. His recent purchase of a farmhouse on an island off the coast of British Columbia showcases his commitment to self-reliance and a DIY ethos.

Located deep in the Salish Sea, the island can only be accessed via boat, with a ferry running a few times a day from Tsawwassen. DeMarco’s rustic farmhouse came with eighty olive trees, with which he has been tirelessly tinkering. Pruning dead branches and fostering an “open vase” shape for the trees became DeMarco’s daily routine during my visit to the island.

DeMarco’s journey to stardom began in 2012 with the release of his EP, “Rock and Roll Night Club,” under Captured Tracks. By his second album, “Salad Days,” in 2014, he had already established himself as the slacker king of indie rock. Mixing elements of Neil Young and Brian Wilson with a modern twist, DeMarco’s music resonated with a wide audience. His sudden surge in popularity led to encounters with passionate, and sometimes eccentric, fans.

Fast forward to the present day, and DeMarco’s popularity has soared even higher. Tracks like “Chamber of Reflection” have become TikTok sensations, amassing millions of streams. With over twenty million monthly listeners on Spotify, DeMarco’s music has transcended generations, captivating a younger audience with his laid-back tunes and quirky persona.

DeMarco’s new island retreat serves as a backdrop for his upcoming release, “Guitar,” his tenth record. Recorded in his Los Angeles home, the album is a testament to his musical prowess and independence. DeMarco played every instrument, produced, engineered, and mixed the songs himself, embodying a true DIY spirit. Additionally, he delved into visual aspects by shooting the album cover and music videos using only a tripod.

Embracing challenges and new experiences, DeMarco’s foray into renovating his island home reflects his desire to continue growing and learning. With a mix of excitement and nervousness, he navigates the complexities of home improvements, drawing parallels between his personal growth and the physical changes he is making to his surroundings.

As DeMarco continues to evolve as an artist and individual, his unwavering commitment to his craft and independence shines through. Through his music and lifestyle choices, DeMarco remains a unique figure in the music industry, challenging conventions and embracing a DIY spirit that sets him apart from the rest.
