Deep Purple’s ‘Made in Japan’ Gets a Super Deluxe Treatment

In August 1972, Deep Purple embarked on a momentous journey to Japan that resulted in one of the most revered live albums in rock history, “Made in Japan.” This iconic release is set to receive a Super Deluxe Edition on August 15, 2025, courtesy of Rhino/Warner Records. The new collection boasts fresh stereo and Dolby ATMOS mixes by esteemed producer Steven Wilson, along with the remixed concerts by Richard Digby Smith and a selection of rare single edits. The 5-CD/Blu-ray set is currently available for pre-order, offering fans an unrivaled experience of this legendary record.

The August 15 concerts in Japan saw Deep Purple’s famed Mk II lineup, featuring members like Ian Gillan, Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord, Roger Glover, and Ian Paice, transform beloved tracks such as “Smoke On The Water,” “Highway Star,” and “Space Truckin'” into electrifying live renditions. Roger Glover fondly reminisces about the magical experience, noting how the audience knew the lyrics by heart, creating an unforgettable atmosphere that transcended geographical barriers.

To capture the essence of this monumental event, the band enlisted the expertise of Martin Birch, a seasoned engineer who had worked on several of their previous studio albums. With cutting-edge eight-track tape technology, the shows at Festival Hall and the Budokan were meticulously recorded, allowing the Super Deluxe Edition to deliver a full-throttle performance by Deep Purple. The setlist features a blend of tracks from their latest release, “Machine Head,” and timeless classics like “Child In Time,” “Strange Kind Of Woman,” and “Speed King.”

Aside from the mesmerizing live performances, the collection also includes rare single edits such as the German version of “Black Night” and the Mexican edit of “Space Truckin’.” Originally intended as an exclusive release for Japan, the double live album “Made in Japan” took the world by storm upon its global debut in the early ’70s. With Platinum certifications in the U.S. and Europe, Deep Purple solidified their status as global rock icons, captivating audiences worldwide with their electrifying sound.
