If you’re a fan of picturesque lakes, enchanting forests, and a delightful downtown scene, this captivating Northern Michigan location will captivate you as much as it has captured my heart.

The more time I spend in Cadillac, the more I realize the plethora of opportunities it presents, not to mention the unforgettable family moments it has provided me with. From the easily accessible lakeside path and an exhilarating ORV Scenic Ride to the delectable pastries at a local shop and the warm welcome at a neighboring bakery, Cadillac is brimming with places that beckon me to visit again. Plus, being just about an hour and a half drive from my hometown in Grand Rapids, it strikes the perfect balance of feeling like a true getaway without breaking the bank on gas.

Gratitude is owed to the Cadillac Area Visitors Bureau for collaborating with Awesome Mitten to highlight this stunning region in Michigan.

The downtown area of Cadillac is a gem of perfect proportions – the kind where you park once and have access to everything you need. One standout feature is the picturesque lake path that meanders through Cadillac Commons, passes by the fountain in City Park, and leads you to the Keith McKellop Walkway, offering a brief yet captivating stroll along Lake Cadillac.

A leisurely dinner in downtown Cadillac followed by a scenic walk along the lakefront is an ideal way to spend an evening. A canopy of shady trees and a gentle breeze from the lake set the perfect ambience for a leisurely walk or for some playtime at the nearby playground or the enchanting Sound Garden.
For those seeking a lengthier stroll or a bike ride, the Keith McKellop Walkway seamlessly connects to the White Pine Trail, opening up avenues for extended adventures.

A handy tip is to drop by the Visitor Center downtown – housed in the historical former firehouse, it’s a part of the KISStory Tour and offers a wealth of information on local attractions and historical tours alike.

Venturing into downtown and its vicinity in Cadillac unveils an array of quaint shops and eateries, many of which reside in historic edifices, exuding an additional layer of charm.
Some of my personal downtown haunts include Wildflour Bakery, famed for its exquisite decor, delectable pastries, and boba teas, and The Sweet Shop, a candy paradise stocked with chocolates, saltwater taffy, and ice cream, amongst other tempting treats. Clam Lake Beer Co. is a dependable choice for a satisfying meal washed down with some great drinks. Another beloved spot is the After 26 Depot, nestled in a renovated train depot, serving up exceptional fare while employing adults with disabilities, making it a standout for its impressive food and welcoming service. The Bird House stands out as a treasure trove of artisanal goods, filled with locally crafted jewelry, candles, maple syrup, salsas, and jams.

Moving westwards through Cadillac towards the lakes, one can find Mr. Foisie’s offering the tastiest pasties around, a delightful surprise in lower Michigan. Timbers, with its eclectic decor, family-friendly menu, and cozy ambiance, is another hotspot in Cadillac West. Michigan Coffee Co. is known for its fantastic breakfast sandwiches and also serves as a fun shop to snag some mementos. Cone Lickers charms with its vibrant neon sign, color-changing spoons, and irresistibly delicious ice cream.

Outdoor escapades form an integral part of any sojourn, and Cadillac graciously delivers on that front as well, offering a tapestry of natural wonders to be explored, either in tranquil escapades or in adrenaline-filled exploits, each promising their own appeal.

For a serene hiking experience, the Heritage Nature Trail in the Mitchell State Park remains a treasured family favorite. A visit to the Carl T. Johnson Hunting & Fishing Center allows for a hands-on experience, borrowing fishing poles for some canal fishing.
A leisurely day by the water is best spent at either Mitchell State Park or Kenwood Heritage Park, boasting beaches and playgrounds and proving to be idyllic for families with kids. Kenwood Heritage Park also boasts an excellent disc golf course.

Turning up the excitement dial are thrilling outdoor activities like the ORV Scenic Ride in Cadillac, where we had a memorable time skimming through the forest on an ORV on a beautiful summer day. A downpour midway through the ride only added to the thrill, splashing through the puddles and making it even more fun. Renting jet skis on Lake Cadillac offered another exhilarating adventure. Despite my love for the grandeur of the Great Lakes, the serenity and warmth of the inland lakes of Cadillac, like Lake Cadillac and Lake Mitchell, make for an ideal setting for family fun.

Cadillac, a town steeped in rock ‘n’ roll history, takes immense pride in its musical legacy, evident in its celebratory vibe.
