Demi Lovato recently discussed her return to pop music during an interview on the Chicks in the Office podcast, explaining her decision to explore pop anthems on her upcoming ninth studio album. This shift comes after Lovato bid farewell to her pop music persona in 2022, following the release of her rock-inspired album “HOLY FVCK.” While she revisited her Disney Channel pop-rock roots with this album, she experimented with a harder sound incorporating punk and metal influences. The response from fans was overwhelmingly positive, leading her to rework some of her classic hits for a 2023 remix album titled “REVAMPED.”
Despite the success of her rock-inspired music, Lovato revisited her career trajectory and concluded that the rock genre did not align with her artistic vision. She referred to her rock albums as a “passion project” that paid homage to her formative years and emo music influences. While she enjoyed connecting with these roots, she recognized the importance of returning to the sound that resonated best with her and her audience – her signature pop style. In her own words, she reflected on what worked best for her, citing hits like “Cool for the Summer” as a driving force for her return to familiar territory.
Lovato’s upcoming album promises a return to the dance-pop genre, teased by her latest single “Fast.” The shift towards a more upbeat and energetic sound mirrors her personal happiness, following her recent marriage to husband Jordan Lutes and her directorial debut in the documentary “Child Star.” Unlike her previous albums that delved into heavy topics, Lovato’s new music reflects her current state of mind – one filled with joy and positivity.
The singer acknowledged the evolution in her songwriting approach, opting for a more lighthearted and fictional narrative to complement the album’s overall tone. She recognized the limitations of continuously writing love songs or songs about intense emotions, leading her to explore new creative avenues. By adopting a different perspective and venturing into fictional storytelling, Lovato managed to infuse her emotional depth into her music while still embracing a newfound sense of liberation and creativity.
