He completed his album, then decided to start over and create a new one in just 12 days.
Mac DeMarco has been hard at work on more than just his music. The indie-rock artist has been busy building a literal well enclosure on his farm property in British Columbia. Mac has been digging deep into the ground, not as a metaphor, but to construct a beautiful cedar well enclosure resembling an outhouse.
The casual DIY tradesman aesthetic suits Mac DeMarco, known for his laid-back and lovable indie-rock persona since the release of his debut album, “2,” in 2012. His latest album, “Guitar,” was a passion project done entirely by himself. With songs, cover art, and videos all created in a mere 12 days, Mac embraced the DIY spirit wholeheartedly.
Despite the success of his album “Here Comes the Cowboy,” which found a place in the top 10 on the Billboard 200, Mac DeMarco remains skeptical of his own achievements. The track “Heart to Heart” went viral on TikTok long after the album’s initial release in 2019, leading to it charting in the Billboard Hot 100. However, Mac questions the industry’s metrics, noting that success in terms of sales and chart positions doesn’t hold much weight for him.
DeMarco is unapologetic about his approach to music and remains steadfast in maintaining his independence. As the founder of Mac’s Record Label since 2018, he has little patience for major labels trying to navigate the changing landscape of the music industry. While some labels struggle to understand platforms like TikTok, DeMarco believes they are simply playing coy to maintain a facade of confusion.
The artist’s journey has taken him to some unconventional creative places, including releasing a 199-track album titled “One Wayne G” and a collection of instrumental compositions under the name “Five Easy Hot Dogs.” These projects serve as testaments to his boundless creativity and desire to share music without expectation or constraint.
Before recording “Guitar,” Mac DeMarco had already completed another album called “Hear the Music.” However, he decided to scrap it in favor of a fresh start. Feeling bogged down in the technicalities of the recording process, he found himself losing the essence of the music in his quest for perfection. The decision to start over with “Guitar” allowed him to tap into a more authentic and immediate creative flow.
As Mac DeMarco continues to blaze his trail in the music industry, his emphasis remains on the purity of his artistry rather than chasing commercial success. With a down-to-earth approach to his work, he forges ahead on his own terms, creating music that is true to himself and his vision.
