Eindhoven’s rock music scene is defined by its rough, no-nonsense approach, and the recent Ankerfest rock festival held at Sectie-C showcased this raw and energetic sound. Bands from the city and the region, including Tankzilla, The Spades, Tusky, Tigre Blanco, and Iron Jinn, took the stage at this year’s event. Many of these bands regularly rehearse at Anker Studio, located within the creative hub of Sectie-C. Festival organizer Erik van Schenk Bril, who is closely involved with Anker Studio, noted the growing presence of young bands utilizing the space straight out of school, contributing to the vibrant music culture.

The fourth edition of Ankerfest drew a diverse and enthusiastic crowd of over five hundred attendees. The intimate and welcoming atmosphere allowed visitors to feel comfortable and truly be themselves. Attendees appreciated the festival’s small-scale setting, with one expressing gratitude for not having to endure long walks to access the event. Another visitor praised the festival’s inclusivity, showcasing a mix of both veteran and emerging rock enthusiasts coming together to celebrate the music.

Tigre Blanco’s lead singer, Quintijn Lohman, highlighted the significance of venues like Sectie-C in fostering a vibrant music community. He described the festival as a fantastic platform for organizing such events and fostering connections within the rock scene. The festival’s success was evident in the diverse and enthusiastic crowd that turned out to support local talent and enjoy a day of live music.

However, the future of Ankerfest remains uncertain due to ongoing developments in the Tongelre district. Plans for the redevelopment of Section C include the construction of new residential buildings, potentially affecting the availability of rehearsal spaces in the area. Van Schenk Brill expressed concerns about the festival’s future, emphasizing the importance of maintaining this creative space that has become a home for local musicians and enthusiasts alike.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding future events, the impact of Ankerfest on Eindhoven’s rock music scene and the community at large cannot be overlooked. The festival serves as a testament to the city’s vibrant music culture, bringing together musicians, fans, and newcomers in a shared celebration of rock music. As Eindhoven continues to evolve and grow, preserving spaces like Sectie-C becomes crucial in sustaining the city’s creative spirit and supporting local talent.
