Dunedin friends releasing hit songs independently
Mild Orange, a London-based Kiwi band, is characterized by their love for travel and connection. With their debut album, “Foreplay,” gaining popularity among American online music enthusiasts, songs like ‘Some Feeling’ and ‘Freak In Me’ have received streams in the millions.
In their latest release, “The//Glow,” the band encapsulates the essence of London’s nightlife, where they have resided since 2022, as well as heartland rock, which has been a staple during their long drives across the United States for performances.
Josh Mehrtens, the band’s singer, guitarist, producer, manager, and legal advisor, acknowledges the influence of country guitars on their sound, attributing it to the innate appeal of their music. The transition from New Zealand to the bustling city of London was initially challenging for the group of friends from Otago University. Still, after three years, they have integrated into the vibrant live music scene of their adopted home.
Despite being an independent “internet band,” Mild Orange has navigated the online music world with positivity and minimal encounters with trolls. However, Mehrtens emphasizes that their shared love for real-life travel experiences is fundamental to their music-making process. They take pride in establishing connections with listeners worldwide and aspire to resonate with audiences everywhere as a representative of Kiwi music.
Alongside his creative roles in the band, Mehrtens, a qualified lawyer, also serves as the legal counsel for Mild Orange, while drummer Jack Ferguson handles the band’s financial matters. The autonomy of being an independent band allows Mild Orange to uphold artistic integrity and retain control over their creative vision.
Their latest album, “The//Glow,” transcends the confines of bedroom pop, incorporating elements of rock anthems with diverse guitar arrangements and orchestration. Songs like ‘My Light’ reflect a departure from their dreamy sound, featuring layers of complexity that challenge conventional song structures.
‘My Light’ is a personal tribute from Mehrtens to his wife, Summer, embodying themes of hope and support in times of darkness. Despite its seemingly simple composition consisting of two chords, the track showcases the band’s dedication to crafting meaningful and impactful music that resonates with audiences.
As Mild Orange continues to evolve artistically, they strive to innovate and push boundaries without conforming to specific genres. Their eclectic sound and commitment to authentic storytelling underscore their creative ethos, as they seek to engage listeners with emotionally resonant music.
