Welcome back to Clattermouuuth’s Music of the Week, where we delve into Rockaway’s music scene one artist at a time. Previously, I had the pleasure of featuring Mei Semones, a talented jazz and indie rock musician, and her latest album. Today, let’s dive into the full interview I had with Mei:

When asked to describe her music to those unfamiliar, Mei succinctly defined it as jazz-influenced indie j-pop. Her project, Kabutomushi, which has garnered widespread acclaim, was a labor of love that took shape over several months. Mei shared that most of the songs were penned between the summers of ’22 and ’23, with recording sessions spanning winter into spring of ’23. Her songwriting process typically begins with establishing chords, followed by melody and lyrics, culminating in bringing the composition to her band for collaborative arrangement.

Mei’s musical journey traces back to her childhood, where she began playing the piano at the tender age of four. By 11, she had taken up the guitar and soon started crafting her own songs. However, it wasn’t until her debut single, “Hfoas,” released in 2022, that Mei felt she had truly struck a chord with herself artistically.

Drawing inspiration from legends like John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, and others, Mei’s musical influences are deeply rooted. Her circle of friends and bandmates, who are all accomplished musicians in their own right, also serve as wellsprings of creativity for Mei. Living in Brooklyn, NY, adds another layer of inspiration to her artistry, with everyday experiences shaping her music in profound ways.
