Jay Electronica has made a surprise return with the release of a new project titled A Written Testimony: Leaflets. This unexpected offering consists of only seven songs and serves as a complementary piece to the Roc Nation MC’s debut album, A Written Testimony, which fans had been eagerly waiting for.

Featuring guest appearances from Quentin Miller and DRAM, alongside an intro from Diddy, excitingly marking the mogul’s second on-wax cameo since his recent legal troubles following Kanye West’s “Lonely Roads Still Go to Sunshine” earlier this year. Diddy, a long-time supporter of Jay Electronica, had previously tried to sign him to Bad Boy in the late 2000s after the breakout success of “Exhibit C.”

Despite the anticipation surrounding any new Jay Electronica project, Leaflets is not a typical release. The project’s 29-minute run time includes sampled audio clips that reflect Jay’s religious beliefs and delve into conspiracy theories, touching on topics from UFOs to climate change skepticism.

Nevertheless, when Jay Electronica touches the mic, it’s always something special. On the track “Abracadabra,” he boldly announces, “The entire trajectory of my career screams ‘fuck the industry’ / Yet you can’t have a debate about the greats and not mention my name.” Additionally, “Japan Airline 1682,” which samples indie rock band Vacations, showcases Jay channeling his inner rock star, a surprising twist even for his most loyal fans.

Another highlight on the project comes from “Four Billion, Four Hundred Million (4,400,000,000) / The Worst Is Yet To Come,” where the New Orleans native hints at more music to come. “Hov been such a brother to me and so patient with me,” he raps, acknowledging Jay-Z’s unwavering support despite his own lack of consistent output. “I gave him 19 albums in one day and he ain’t even have to pay me,” Jay Electronica shares, leaving fans hopeful for more music on the horizon.

With the recent streaming release of Act II: The Patents of Nobility (The Turn), Jay Electronica’s fabled and previously unreleased album that resurfaced in 2020, it appears that fans can expect more from the elusive artist in the near future. The surprise drop of A Written Testimony: Leaflets adds to the excitement surrounding Jay Electronica’s musical trajectory, hinting at more to come from the talented musician.
