WALLS metalcore band releases new video for song “Gears of Destruction”
Crushing metalcore group WALLS have recently dropped their newest EP titled “Endeavour of Destruction” along with a music video for the track “Gears of the Cold Machine.” This release comes on the heels of their single “We ALL Suffer” that came out earlier in the month, forming the next chapter in the band’s ongoing thematic journey that began with their previous release “Endeavour of Adaptation” from last year. The band’s focus has shifted from survival and adaptation to destruction in this new EP.
The core message of the record is a direct commentary on how systemic failures affect us all, leaving us feeling trapped while still maintaining the status quo. WALLS poignantly address the impossibility or reluctance to break free, the irony of complaining without taking action, and the realization that each individual is a cog in a relentless machine.
The central track, “Gears of the Cold Machine,” encapsulates this sentiment with lyrics like “Still catching fire in an ocean of gasoline,” painting a vivid picture of self-destructive tendencies. The song’s structure emphasizes impact and repetition, leaving no room for interpretation with lines like “We bleed for nothing, yet beg for more / They feed us shit, we swallow it whole” and “Honestly I’m done / Trying to pretend that this is not the end.”
Complementing the song, the music video for “Gears of the Cold Machine,” directed by Seppe Germaux, visually illustrates the never-ending cycle of being part of a system that we try to escape. It features a protagonist fleeing from masked pursuers, only to realize in the end that he himself has been masked all along. The video serves as a stark reminder of the futility of trying to evade a system that we are already a part of.
“Endeavour of Destruction” as a whole marks a return to WALLS’ nu-metal and hardcore roots while incorporating a heavier sound with their revamped lineup. With the original singer back in the fold, the bassist adding depth to the low-end, and a new drummer injecting intensity, the EP embodies a collision of the band’s past and present, resulting in a chaotic and cathartic listening experience.
The relentless nature of the lyrics, featuring lines like “No freedom in a free choice,” “We’re already dead inside / ready to burn,” and “Nothing to prove yet I live inside a test,” showcases a sense of resignation and being slowly drained. The EP refrains from offering any glimmer of hope, preferring to confront listeners with the harsh reality of the traps we find ourselves in.
For WALLS, “Endeavour of Destruction” isn’t merely a creative endeavor but a firm belief in using music as a tool for introspection and societal critique. The EP is a wake-up call, aiming to dismantle the excuses that allow the oppressive system to persist. Through their music, WALLS hold up a mirror to society, urging listeners to confront the uncomfortable truths that lie beneath the surface.
